Electrical Systems Subject Matter Expert (SME) –Mission-CriticalLocation: Spartanburg, SC
OverviewWe are seeking an Electrical Systems Subject Matter Expert (SME) to serve as the on-site technical authority for mission-critical electrical systems supporting a High-Performance Compute Center (HPCC) and associated on-site power generation infrastructure.
This role is part of a rotating team of Electrical SMEs providing continuous 24/7/365 coverage. The SME works directly alongside Critical Infrastructure Operators, Mechanical Systems SMEs, Liquid Cooling Infrastructure SMEs, and Energy Station teams to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient electrical operations across data center, compute, and power generation environments.
The ideal candidate brings deep hands-on expertise in medium- and low-voltage electrical systems, UPS and switchgear operations, and generator integration, paired with strong leadership, communication, and safety-first operational discipline.
Key ResponsibilitiesElectrical Operations Authority•Serve as the on-shift electrical authority for all power distribution, UPS, generator, and switchgear systems supporting the HPCC •Provide real-time technical oversight during switching, energization, restoration, and abnormal operating conditions •Coordinate closely with contracted operator teams to ensure safe and reliable electrical operations •Monitor system performance, identify anomalies, and direct corrective actionsSystem Knowledge & Troubleshooting•Maintain in-depth understanding of electrical single-line diagrams, protection schemes, and system interdependencies •Troubleshoot electrical faults, alarms, and abnormal conditions in coordination with controls, mechanical, and cross-functional teams •Participate in root-cause analyses following electrical events, outages, or system disruptions •Support commissioning, acceptance testing, and equipment start-up activitiesSafety, Compliance & Procedures•Serve as on-shift authority for Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), energized work permitting, and arc-flash PPE compliance •Enforce adherence to NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, OSHA, and site-specific EHS requirements •Promote a culture of safety, procedural discipline, and accountability across all shifts •Assist in developing, reviewing, and refining operating procedures and LOTO plansTraining, Communication & Governance•Mentor and train operators and maintenance personnel on electrical safety, system operation, and procedural execution •Support qualification programs and skills assessments for electrical operators •Act as the primary electrical liaison between infrastructure, compute, and power generation teams •Ensure clear communication during shift handovers and operational transitions •Maintain accurate shift logs, equipment status updates, and event documentation •Identify procedural gaps or improvement opportunities and escalate recommendations to leadership •Contribute to lessons-learned documentation following incidents or deviationsQualifications•Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience •8+ years of experience working with medium- and low-voltage electrical systems in data centers, industrial facilities, or power generation environments •Strong operational experience with switchgear, UPS systems, generators, protective relays, and power distribution systems •Proven ability to mentor and train operators or technicians in electrical safety and operations •Thorough knowledge of NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, OSHA regulations, and mission-critical electrical best practices •Ability to read and interpret complex electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and control logic •Strong situational awareness and decision-making skills in live, high-pressure operational environments •Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teamsWhy JoinThis is a hands-on, operations-focused role supporting cutting-edge, mission-critical compute infrastructure.
