Job Description

The Electrophysiology Technologist provides support to physicians and other medical personnel in real time surgery by evaluating fluoroscopy options, performing radiologic imaging, and providing problem solving solutions to equipment issues during procedures in the Electrophysiology Lab in order to maximize efficiency and equipment usage.

Responsibilities and Duties

Creates accurate, high-quality images before, during, and after surgical procedures by operating imaging equipment and other Electrophysiology lab equipment/devices and adapts as necessary for procedures planned by physicians.

Provides input to physicians on fluoroscopy imaging during procedures and acts as a fluoroscopy equipment resource. Anticipates fluoroscopy needs, exposure factors, and contrast media for patients undergoing hybrid procedures.

Selects and handles instruments and supplies used for the procedure, monitors supplies as depleted and obtains additional supplies throughout surgical procedures and inventories all countable items pre- and post-surgery to ensure none remain in the patient post-operatively.

Notifies supervisor of malfunctioning equipment immediately.

Assists nursing in assuming care for physical and psychological needs of the patient during the procedures, e.g., monitoring vital signs (before, during and after cases), minimizes patient discomfort.

Anticipates needs of physician and other team members during electrophysiology procedures.

Assures that informed consent has been obtained on the patient and that all questions and concerns have been answered to the patient's satisfaction.

Safely operates and troubleshoots complex Electrophysiology Lab equipment.

Thoroughly documents procedure events and patient care into EMT and Imaging System to capture patient visit and charge information, including exam time and resource/supply usage, in adherence with hospital/regulatory requirements.

Annotates images, as needed, and sends all studies to Imaging Systems and the correct work list which limits the number of unnecessary, unspecified exams.

Adheres to radiation safety measures under the supervision of the Radiologist and further ensures safety of patients, hospital employees, and physicians by following all personnel, safety and infection control policies, National Patient Safety Goals, TJC standards, and proper universal infection control guidelines.

Supervises radiologic technology students during clinical rotations and orientation of new personnel.

Provides support and coverage for radiologic needs in the operating room and invasive areas.

Participates in continuing education and learning experiences to enhance and maintain current knowledge and skills for continued competence.

Education

High School Diploma or GED required

Completion of an accredited (2) year Allied Health training program preferred

Experience

Two years of full-time equivalent work experience in invasive cardiology, diagnostic and interventional cardiac electrophysiology, including Advanced Mapping and Device Implants (pacemaker, ICD, and CRT) preferred

Certification & Licensure

Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist certification required within two years of hire

A Registered Radiology Technologist may be hired into this position with ARRT(R) registry and satisfactory completion of an AMA accredited Radiologic Technology Program required

BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart 'Healthcare Provider' (HCP) - AHA approved required. New hires must have American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification prior to completion of orientation.

ACLS Certification (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) required prior to the completion of orientation.

Qualifications

Demonstrates knowledge and skill of the moderate sedation process required

Demonstrated knowledge of human growth and development required

Competence in providing fluoroscopy services for patients of all ages including pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric required

Demonstrated progressive learning required

Excellent written and verbal communication required

Ability to relate to physicians, peers, and patients on a professional and technical level required

Ability to independently fulfill educational needs to pursue self-development opportunities required
