About the Opportunity

This is an open position with the FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.

The Distribution Standards engineer provides technical expertise and project support for Distribution Engineering Standards and Distribution Design across the entire FirstEnergy footprint. The position involves coordination of projects/objectives between the Operating Companies and various corporate groups including but not limited to, Distribution Standards, Distribution Planning and Protection, Distribution Engineering, Supply Chain, and IT.

The individual serves a critical role in helping FirstEnergy Utilities meet and comply with regulatory commitments. This position is key to implementing technological improvements, supporting rulemaking proceedings, and driving Energy Delivery leadership initiatives. The engineer works across FirstEnergy, peer utilities, industry user groups and manufacturing partners to provide technical expertise to FirstEnergy.

The preferred reporting locations are the company's corporate offices in Fairmont, WV; Akron, OH; and Greensburg, PA. Other corporate office locations will be considered.

Responsibilities include:

  • Creating Engineering Practices, Material Specifications, Field Guides, and Construction Standards for distribution line projects.
  • Analyzing standards and equipment issues and recommending appropriate solutions and alternate design options.
  • Reviewing manufacturer drawings for compliance with specifications.
  • Coordinating Working Groups of Distribution Engineering and Planning and Operating Company end users to confirm best practices are being followed and available tools and technology are being leveraged.
  • Working with Operating Company and Work Force Development to ensure accurate training materials are available for end users.
  • Documenting proposed enhancements and implementation for Distribution Standards.
  • Participating on weekly/monthly department status calls for projects.
  • Championing adherence to established Distribution Standards.
  • Providing critical support to the Operating Companies, Energy Delivery leadership, and Legal (e.g. incoming/outgoing regulatory complaints) and provide technical advice and education to users.
  • Conducting research/analyze industry data to identify, develop and implement best practices for Energy Delivery, including an effective asset management process.
  • Attending industry user group meetings as necessary to support FirstEnergy as a premier utility, including but not limited to Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), IEEE, National Electric Energy Testing Research and Applications Center (NEETRAC), etc.
  • Serving in a leadership role for the development of designated programs and policies.
  • Supporting the storm response process as either a storm analyst, hazard dispatcher, hazard responder, or in another corporate storm role.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering /Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited institution is required. Acceptable alternatives are:

  • (1) a Professional Engineer's (PE) License

  • (2) a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or technical field of study (non-ABET) plus an advanced degree in Engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.

  • Minimum of three (3) years' engineering work experience is required.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, and able to learn GISView and AutoCAD.

  • Possess technical expertise with FirstEnergy Engineering, Design, Construction, Equipment Standards.

  • Able to make recommendations and practical decisions without undue delay and based on the best information available.

  • Able to conduct research, analyze data, interpret results, communicate findings and recommend solutions.

  • Possess strong organizational, computer, and problem-solving skills.

  • Able to establish practical priorities in the face of conflicting demands.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with people at all levels across the FE organization and external parties.

  • Able to communicate effectively with good verbal skills and writing skills, providing comprehensive project status reports, presentations, clear and concise correspondence, and accurate information.

  • Able to lead by example and coach others in effective decision making.

  • Willing to travel throughout the service territory and work extra and/or irregular hours including storm duty.

FirstEnergy takes a market-based approach to pay, which may vary depending on your location. In addition, your actual base salary will depend on various factors such as your skills, qualifications, and experience.

The estimated pay range for this role is $84,500 - $122,000. The pay range for certain locations, including the state of New Jersey, include a 20% differential to account for an increased cost of living, making the pay range $101,000 - $146,000.
