Department: Facilities Management/Engineering Department

Job Title: Engineering/Architecture Principal Professional

Job Summary:

Support the Facilities Condition Assessment (FCA) Program:

  • Oversee' FCA program consistency

  • Work with other staff, to ensure program database is maintained and that processes and procedures are used to allow the database to be updated and confirmed relevant

  • Participate in data collection and provide expertise that guides the department to use the database effectively

  • Provide necessary reporting that demonstrates database usefulness

  • Oversee Facilities Audit program that utilizes other department staff and resources

  • Communicate with department staff to highlight program priorities

  • Review the integrity of the databases and reports annually

Support the Controlled Maintenance (CM) Planning Program:

  • Utilizing FCA program outcomes, oversee the Controlled Maintenance program objectives; insuring a comprehensive understanding of State requirements

  • Coordinate and organize department staff and resources to meet program objectives

  • Prepare the annual Controlled Maintenance submittal to meet State objectives and deadlines

  • Provide communication and recommendations to other department staff who will execute elements of the CM submittal, including zone staff who will provide maintenance services associated with new CM projects

  • Coordinate long term project objectives by utilizing building-optimization master plans and FCA database, where appropriate

  • Participate in CM projects in the design, construction, and warranty phases.

Support the Deferred Maintenance (DM) Planning Program:

  • Work with management to align Deferred Maintenance funding with project needs that meet departmental needs and goals that are not eligible for CM funding

  • Maintain a database of departmental needs and proposed finding amounts top provide a master plan for this program.

  • Provide communication and recommendations to other department staff who will execute elements of the DM submittal, including zone staff who will provide maintenance services associated with new DM projects

  • Utilizing FCA program outcomes, provide recommendations for project prioritization to management.

  • Communicate project scope and details to the Capitol Projects Teams as projects are approved

  • Coordinate long term project objectives by utilizing building-optimization master plans and FCA database, where appropriate

Project and Construction Support:

  • Support the project development process to ensure proposed projects are adequately reviewed to define their scope of work so as to not adversely impact existing building systems, including BMO Projects (Building Maintenance & Operations) associated with additions, alterations, and modifications.

  • For assigned projects, serve as Operations Project Representative (OPR), representing the department and supporting the interests of a long-term building owner, with the intent to design, build, and maintain efficient and attractive campus buildings and infrastructure.

  • Actively participate in the project review process. Assist in the development of guidelines and construction standards to be used by consulting architects and engineers. Building infrastructure considerations should include, but are not limited to the following systems: BAS functionality, HVAC/R systems, lighting & occupancy-sensor systems, emergency power systems, and electrical distribution systems.

  • Participate in a coordinated and cooperative professional handling of construction activities to further the development of sustainable and maintainable buildings, systems and infrastructure for the long-term use by university faculty, staff and visitors.

Support Central Utility Plant (CUP) Control System:

  • Supports the CUP by providing engineering analysis in operation of the utility plant digital control system. Position must understand the software/hardware configuration of the Siemens Industry, Inc. provided BAS which is used as the operator interface for the digital control of plant boilers and chillers and associated ancillary equipment.

  • Position is responsible to coordinate and direct all necessary BAS support & service for the CUP enterprise.

  • Works under supervision to address utility plant concerns and supports the BAS and digital control needs at the CUP.

  • Assists in the preparation of necessary status reports and prepares trend analysis and system troubleshooting reports.

  • Participates and supports the engineering process for the CUP enterprise.

  • Provide engineering support associated with CUP operations, including equipment staging and capacity utilization, project development (design drawings and specifications), project oversight, project

Support the Building Automation System (BAS) Program:

  • Supports the multi-campus BAS program by providing engineering analysis in operation of the BAS digital control system. Position must understand the software/hardware configuration of the Siemens Industry, Inc. provided BAS which is used as the operator interface for the digital control of campus facilities, especially HVAC operations.

  • Works under supervision to address BAS program concerns.

  • Assists in the preparation of necessary status reports and prepares trend analysis and system troubleshooting reports.

  • Maintains effective working relationship with local contractors and vendors concerning industry standards in building automation system design and practice.

  • Maintains effective working relationship with Facilities Projects to help coordinate construction and renovation projects that may impact the BAS program.

  • Participates in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (AssetWorks) for the BAS Program. The work includes utilization of the Preventative Maintenance & Corrective Maintenance process associated with the BAS program.

5% - Support Building Maintenance & Operations (BMO):

  • Support campus BMO (Building Maintenance & Operations) zone operations and the skilled trade shops. Coordinates with the outage program for the various campuses as needed.

  • Participate in the PM (preventative maintenance) process, the work order process, time and materials reporting, and the regular review of associated reports. Meet the staff objectives for utilizing the AssetWorks CMMS (computerized maintenance management system) program, including support of the Facilities Audit Program coordinated through the Engineering Division.

  • Provide emergency response support for UC Denver multi-campus facilities, BMO interests, and CUP operation. This may require on-site personal activities or remote computer operated response.

  • Performs related duties as assigned by Facilities Management or as deemed necessary for the effective and efficient operations of the UC Denver programs and facilities. Maintains a constructive and civil working relationship with campus administrative managers and university academic & research staff in order to assist with BMO activities.

Work Location:

The Energy & Project Development Principal Engineer will be expected to work onsite at the Anschutz Medical Campus, located in Aurora, CO.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical, Engineering, facilities management, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.

  • 3-5 years of professional industry experience in the Building Automation System (BAS) field.

Substitution: An advanced/post-graduate degree (Master's or Doctorate) may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis if the degree is in a field of study relevant and/or directly related to the industry and work assignment.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in facilities engineering related to Building Automation System and digital controls design, installation, and operation.

  • Experience working with the methods and practices related to HVAC/R (heating, ventilating and air-conditioning/refrigeration) design, construction, and operation of building systems.

  • Experience working with a Building Automation System networked in a distributed manner in a multi-building campus setting, preferably an academic health and research campus.

  • Certification as a Certified Energy Manager, or the ability to attain this certification within the first six months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, specifically Excel spreadsheets.

  • Excellent oral communication skills with the ability to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.

  • Familiarity with chillers, mechanical systems, boilers, steam systems and electrical systems

  • Ability to administer, effectively plan, organize and direct a wide variety of energy tracking program responsibilities.

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of facilities management

  • Knowledge of building systems, utilities, maintenance operations

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.

  • Outstanding customer service skills.
