PROTECTION AND CONTROLS ENGINEER - RELAY SETTINGS• Location: Eden Prairie, MN | Hybrid | Remote• Schedule: Full-Time• Salary: $95,000 – $130,000 (based on experience)
EVS is seeking a Protection & Controls Engineer to support substation and transmission protection projects that strengthen grid reliability and support renewable energy integration. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys technical problem-solving, relay settings development, and power system studies while building expertise in protection schemes and coordination analysis.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Assist in developing, modifying, and reviewing protective relay settings for microprocessor-based relays.
- Support protection coordination and fault studies using tools such as ASPEN OneLiner and ETAP.
- Participate in preparing relay coordination studies under guidance from senior engineers.
- Develop and modify relay settings for transmission and substation protection schemes including line, transformer, bus, capacitor bank, and feeder protection.
- Interpret protection schematics, wiring diagrams, and logic diagrams to support implementation and troubleshooting.
- Assist with relay logic development, testing, and validation to complete protection schemes.
- Support field commissioning, troubleshooting, and relay settings validation activities as needed.
- Collaborate with senior engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure accurate protection system design.
- Communicate technical updates, inputs, and project status with internal teams and clients.
- Participate in technical reviews, training sessions, and team collaboration meetings to build technical expertise.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
- 4+ years of experience in protection and control engineering, relay settings, or power system studies.
- Familiarity with relay configuration tools such as SEL AcSELerator, QuickSet, GE EnerVista, and Mathcad.
- Working knowledge of protective relays from manufacturers such as SEL and GE.
- Exposure to ASPEN OneLiner and/or ETAP for protection coordination and fault studies.
- Basic understanding of utility protection practices and NERC standards is preferred.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office tools including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple project tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative, team-focused mindset.
