Location: 845 Bay Street, Staten Island NY 10304

Position Title: Engineering, Emerging Talent Intern (Summer)

Hourly Rate: $19.00 (Undergraduate), $21.00 (Graduate)

All internship positions are onsite and require regular, in-person attendance at the designated work location.

OVERVIEW OF DEPARTMENT:

The primary responsibility of Staten Island Railways Operations Support department is to ensure that the business runs smoothly, effectively, and professionally. Operations Support oversees several areas within SIR, such as Employee Services, Timekeeping, Finance, Policy Compliance, Training and General Office. In addition, Operations Support works closely with Operational Departments such as the Maintenance of Way Department and the Non-Revenue Shop, which plays a critical role in maintaining the safety and efficiency of railroad operations. SIR Engineering provides Engineering Services for Operations, Capital Projects and Third-Party Work. These services include Design and Specification Review, Surveys, Verifying Contractor Submittals, Planning, Oversight, etc.

The Engineering Intern will work closely with Engineering Employees to supplement their work. This will include attending office and field meetings and internal discussions. Based on Intern's skill set, they may be writing reports, generating PowerPoint presentations, writing memos, generating meeting minutes and the like.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Station Rehabilitation/ADA Improvements

  • Track Replacement

  • Switch Replacement

  • Procurement of New Heavy Equipment used for Construction and Maintenance

  • Radio [Walkie Talkie] Upgrade, moving into a monopole backbone system

  • Third Party Support: includes Con Ed, NYCDOT, NYSDOT, NYCDEP, NYCEDC, etc.

  • Bridge inspections/Structural Integrity

  • Structural Painting/Overcoating

PROJECTS:

  • T-80289, Track & Switch Phase II

  • S-80501 - SIR Radio Upgrade

  • C-80285 - Stapleton Viaduct Rehabilitation [included in the MTA GEC Bundle for Staten Island Railway]

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The candidate should possess organizational, analytical and communication skills.
  • The candidate should be able to work well under pressure and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • The candidate should have a keen eye for detail and be able to work independently while being an active team player.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  • Matriculated in an undergraduate program in good standing with at least 2.5 GPA AND/OR matriculated in a graduate program in good standing with at least 2.8 GPA
  • Major(s) Preferred: Engineering Major - any of the following: Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Computer.
