Job Description

CTDI is seeking an Engineering Technician to serve as an on-site technology/automation support resource at one of our branch locations. This role handles day-to-day upkeep, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance of automated & testing systems in production — including conveyance, sortation, robotics, in-house test solutions and PLC-controlled equipment — to maximize uptime and reliability. The role also supports new system launches across the network, assisting with physical installation and readiness testing of new systems, with travel up to 40% during peak deployment seasons.

1st Shift: 8:00AM - 4:45PM, Monday - Friday

Pay Rate: $21.00 - $38.00 per hour

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary on-site point of contact for automated systems, including conveyance, sortation, testing, robotics, scanning infrastructure, and PLC-controlled equipment.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on hardware per established schedules and manufacturer specs, including management of on-site spare parts.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues on automated equipment to minimize downtime and maintain throughput.
  • Support hardware augmentations and upgrades, including component swaps, sensor replacement/recalibration, and wiring repairs.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs, parts inventory, and service records; escalate recurring issues or parts needs to Engineering and Automation leadership.
  • Coordinate with branch operations to schedule maintenance windows that minimize production impact.
  • Travel to support new launches, assisting with physical installation of conveyance systems, project planning, remote support, and PLC-led hardware at new or upgraded sites.
  • Verify wiring configuration, terminations, and power distribution are correctly run and staged ahead of controls engineers, ensuring hardware is ready for programming and system testing.
  • Support commissioning by confirming physical and electrical readiness of equipment, allowing controls engineers to validate logic and performance prior to go-live; provide hypercare support immediately following go-live

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or technical certification in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Industrial Automation, or related field — or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Experience with industrial automation equipment (conveyance, sortation, robotics, PLC-controlled hardware) strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of electrical and mechanical troubleshooting and preventative maintenance practices. No programming or PLC coding experience required.
  • Comfortable reading electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, and equipment manuals.
  • Ability to work independently on-site with minimal daily supervision while communicating with remote Engineering and Automation teams.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 40% of the time during peak automation launch periods.
  • Physical ability to perform installation-related tasks, including lifting, climbing, and working around moving machinery in an industrial/warehouse environment.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Strong time management skills and the ability to work autonomously.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks based on direction from multiple departments.
  • Excellent organizational and follow-up skills
  • Ability to work with and communicate with a diverse population, including all levels of management
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Clear discriminatory approach to solving engineering problems.
  • Understanding of analog, digital, and microprocessor circuits.
  • Understanding of audio, video and CATV RF formats and circuits.
  • Familiarity with Cable TV (CATV) and Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) technology.
  • Familiarity with IP networks and Linux a plus.
