Job Description

NLR has an opening for an Environment, Safety, and Health (ESH) Point of Contact (POC) for the Materials, Chemical, and Computational Science (MCCS) research directorate and support organizations. The ESH POC will provide technical guidance for hazard identification and control of new and modified work conducted in select research laboratories.

  • Collaborates with research and operational staff to evaluate risks of new or modified work activities and proactively implements continuous environmental, safety, and health (ESH) improvement.
  • Assists in the development of hazard identification and risk assessment documents as part of research/operations projects or activity life cycle.
  • Participate in process hazards analysis methods (e.g., HAZOPS, structured What-If, Fault Tree, Event Tree), and system implementation/verification best practices.
  • Provide effective change management reviews for a variety of processes and scales.
  • Supporting R&D operations in developing, reviewing, and executing equipment specific lockout/tagout procedures for complex research equipment and systems.
  • Reviewing operating procedures for research activities from a safety perspective.
  • Developing and implementing workplace exposure monitoring plans.
  • Provides ESH oversight of subcontractors for research equipment service or maintenance.
  • Apply ESH technical skills to tasks within areas of expertise such as industrial hygiene, occupational safety, electrical safety, lockout/tagout, emergency response and other areas individually or in combination.
  • Participate in ESH inspections, audits, and oversight assessments.
  • Support and participate in Safety & Security Council/Safety Panel activities.
  • Develop and provide other ESH training to various organizational units.
  • Support accident/incident investigation and causal analysis as needed. Follow-up on corrective action implementation.
  • Respond to staff inquiries, concerns, and requests for assistance on ESH matters including guidance on ESH program implementation and/or interpretation.

Basic Qualifications

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Applies extensive technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Contributes to the development of new concepts, techniques and standards. Considered internal subject matter expert. Extensive knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Excellent leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Ability to support the successful implementation of NLR's ESH&Q programs and lab-level procedures.
  • Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to build relationships with colleagues and internal customers.
  • Interacting with researchers, line management, and senior management in a manner that emphasizes and enhances safety culture.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.
  • Proficient computer and technology skills including MS Office Suite, email, integrated software databases, and artificial intelligence (AI) and how they can be applied to integrated safety management systems.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to travel on occasion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).

  • Master's degree in environmental health, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or other relevant discipline.

  • Semiconductor Industry and Hazardous Production Material (HPM) experience

  • Strong chemical safety training and experience - such as a minor in chemistry or experience as a chemical hygiene officer or program owner.

  • Experience working in a research and development environment - such as a laboratory or university.

  • Familiarity with DOE 10 CFR 851 Worker Safety and Health Program and Integrated Safety Management Systems.

  • Working knowledge and experience in electrical safety and applying NFPA 70E Standard.

  • Ability to lead and participate on both intra-office and cross-organizational teams.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Professional IV / Annual Salary Range: $100,400 - $180,700

NLR takes into consideration a candidate's education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee's salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
