Job Description

Position Overview

The Environmental Engineering Region Manager is responsible for providing guidance and advice to region manufacturing staff regarding company environmental control policy and programs to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and operating permits. This position identifies environmental permitting needs and takes necessary action to secure the required permits. The manager develops region policies and procedures concerning waste and emissions discharges and regulated material control to ensure safe and efficient quality operations of all facilities. Additionally, the role involves collecting data, measurements, and samples for technical and environmental monitoring purposes. This is an onsite position and is not remote-eligible, and has a 25% travel requirement.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Investigate noncompliance conditions, set up experiments to determine solutions, and recommend modifications to eliminate causes.
  • Recognize and address events or circumstances that are not in compliance (or potentially non-compliant) with permit requirements and/or regulations, including all media (air, solid and hazardous waste, water), administrative findings, and field observations.
  • Maintain records, review, analyze, compile reports, and summarize information from mills and outside sources, including spreadsheets and data entry.
  • Analyze the impact of new regulations and legislation on policy and procedures.
  • Negotiate with regulatory staff regarding monitoring, reporting, and permit-related requirements, as needed.
  • Participate in capital planning, construction of engineered solutions for environmental problems, and extraordinary maintenance budgeting at select facilities.
  • Develop and oversee implementation and effectiveness of environmental tracking systems and training materials.
  • Communicate environmental issues with mill and region management and with corporate environmental staff.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, quality, environmental awareness, and continuous process improvement.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • College degree, or equivalent work experience in related job function.
  • First-hand knowledge and experience managing wood products environmental compliance programs at the mill level.
  • Extensive knowledge of state and federal environmental regulations as they apply to the wood products industry.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental site assessment processes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as effectively in small teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering or sciences.
  • More than 10 years' experience in management of environmental activities in an industrial, consulting, or government regulatory capacity.
  • PE license or professional certification in soil science, hydrology, geology, or chemistry.
