Job Title: Equipment Finance Valuation Lead

Corporate Title: Director

Department: Equipment Finance

Location: Foxboro/Boston, NYC, Charlotte or Chicago

Overview

Barings Equipment Finance - also known as MassMutual Asset Finance - is a national equipment finance investment platform managing over $9 billion in assets and originating $1-$2 billion annually. The team spans originators, credit analysts, operations, documentation, accounting, and portfolio management professionals, supporting a full‑cycle commercial finance platform.

The Equipment Valuation Manager will lead the valuation program for the platform, serving as the firm's internal expert on equipment values, lifecycle risk, and industry trends. This leader will design and implement a standardized valuation framework, oversee third‑party appraisal strategy, and ensure the platform maintains strong controls, documentation, and forecasting accuracy across all asset classes.

This role is ideal for a valuation expert who is ready to step into a program‑builder, process‑owner, and strategic advisor position with meaningful influence across originations, underwriting, portfolio management, finance, and risk.

Key Responsibilities

Program Leadership & Governance

  • Build and own the enterprise valuation framework, including policies, methodologies, documentation standards, and quality controls.
  • Establish a centralized valuation process that ensures consistency across originations, renewals, restructures, and end‑of‑lease decisions.
  • Develop a multi‑year roadmap to enhance valuation rigor, technology enablement, and data analytics capabilities.

Valuation Strategy & Execution

  • Oversee all valuation activities spanning construction, industrial, transportation, medical, manufacturing, and technology equipment.
  • Direct the selection, onboarding, and performance management of third‑party appraisers; negotiate terms and set service‑level expectations.
  • Review complex or high‑value appraisal packages, challenge assumptions, and provide independent perspective for credit and portfolio committees.

Data, Analytics & Reporting

  • Create and maintain a central valuation database supporting trend analysis, depreciation modeling, and benchmark development.
  • Produce valuation dashboards, risk insights, and forecasting tools used by senior leadership and risk partners.
  • Identify emerging risks in equipment markets and recommend proactive adjustments to underwriting and portfolio strategy.

Cross‑Functional Partnership

  • Serve as the primary valuation advisor to origination, underwriting, portfolio management, finance, operations, and risk.
  • Support credit committee decision‑making through clear, concise valuation assessments and scenario analysis.
  • Provide thought leadership on market shifts, asset performance, and long‑term equipment value dynamics.

Risk Management & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory expectations, internal audit standards, and enterprise risk frameworks.
  • Implement process controls that strengthen accuracy, repeatability, and transparency across valuation activities.
  • Establish periodic internal review cycles to validate appraisal methodologies, data inputs, and assumptions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Engineering, or related field; professional valuation certification strongly preferred.
  • 10-15+ years of equipment valuation, asset management, appraisal, or related experience.
  • Demonstrated experience building or leading valuation programs, processes, or governance structures.
  • Advanced analytical skills with deep knowledge of valuation methodologies, data sources, and market indicators.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to influence senior stakeholders.
  • Strong project management capabilities.
  • Proficiency with asset management systems, financial modeling tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of industry regulations and compliance standards
