Division Overview:

The Forensic Science Division's (FSD) mission is to provide accurate, objective, and timely forensic analysis in support of the Montana criminal justice community. The Crime Lab is an internationally accredited lab and home to the State Medical Examiner's office, where over 625 autopsies a year are performed in Missoula and Billings to determine cause and manner of death in unattended or suspicious circumstances.

The Evidence Technician is responsible for evidence management and is the primary person responsible for the security and integrity of evidence when it is received into the crime lab as well as while in their care, custody, or control. Confidentiality and procedural practices are essential to success in this position. This person may contribute to standard operating procedure updates; train law enforcement and/or division personnel in evidence packaging and submission standards; and may be required to testify in court. The person in this position is integral to crime lab operations and may provide support services to specialized Forensic Science Division sections.

This position is within the toxicology section and the successful applicant will be required to work with potentially biohazardous materials (blood, urine, tissue, etc.)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma

  • Two years of job-related work experience to include word processing, proficiency entering data into databases or excel spreadsheets; MS Office proficiency

  • Other combinations of experience and an education equivalence may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Law enforcement and / or evidence handling experience
