General Responsibilities:

Provide design, drafting, and technical support services related to Engineered Wood Products (EWP) for internal teams and external customers. This role supports customer quoting, material take-offs, order fulfillment, and manufacturing coordination while delivering responsive customer service and technical guidance. The position requires effective prioritization, accuracy, collaboration, and a strong commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities & Tasks:

  • Perform design and drafting services for Engineered Wood Products (EWP) used in customer quotes, material take-offs, and manufacturing support
  • Prepare working drawings, sketches, and graphs from:
  • Walk-in customers
  • Sales order systems
  • Verbal instructions
  • Blueprints, sketches, and written specifications
  • Utilize proprietary 3D modeling, computer-aided design (CAD), and sizing software to create accurate layouts and placement plans
  • Compile floor and roof placement plans converting conventional framing systems to Boise Cascade BCI joists
  • Coordinate and prioritize workload to accommodate expedited orders and special requests
  • Provide plans to customers for review, revision, sign-off, and acceptance
  • Code, maintain, and organize drafting files to ensure accurate retrieval and distribution to engineering staff, vendors, and facility personnel
  • Provide technical EWP and engineering support to BMD distribution center customers
  • Assist with customer service functions including:
  • Answering phones
  • Quote and order entry
  • Providing technical guidance and solutions
  • Schedule EWP order deliveries and coordinate logistics as needed
  • Make outside sales calls to lumberyards and construction job sites when required
  • Initiate telephone sales for EWP products and related accessories (e.g., joist hangers)
  • Operate and maintain drafting and/or engineering equipment as needed

Ideal Candidate Qualifications

  • Familiarity with wood construction, building plans/blueprints, and CAD systems preferred
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • High attention to detail with excellent accuracy and follow-through
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and adapt to shifting daily priorities
  • Coachable mindset with a strong willingness to learn the building materials distribution industry
  • Maintains a positive, solution-oriented attitude

Works effectively both independently and within a team environment

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: College Degree or equivalent work experience in related job function. Working knowledge of CAD system, blueprint reading, and drafting. Duties performed in an office environment.

Preferred Qualifications: Role may require technical certification, or associate degree. Knowledge of the building materials industry and structural experience preferred. Strong math skills, effective communication skills, and familiarity with engineering terms and specifications.
