Expeditor (Expo) Job Description
Job Summary
The Expeditor (Expo) plays a critical role in ensuring smooth communication between the kitchen and front-of-house teams. This position is responsible for coordinating food orders, ensuring proper plating and presentation, maintaining quality standards, and facilitating timely service to guests.
The Expo acts as the final checkpoint for food leaving the kitchen, confirming accuracy, quality, and completeness of each order while maintaining efficient service flow during busy periods.

Essential Responsibilities
Order Coordination & Service Flow
- Receive and organize incoming food orders from the point-of-sale system
- Coordinate ticket flow between kitchen stations to ensure timely order preparation
- Act as the primary communication link between front-of-house and back-of-house teams during service
- Ensure orders are completed in the proper sequence and delivered according to service timing standards
- Confirm that all items are properly entered and tracked through the POS system
Food Quality & Presentation
- Inspect all dishes before leaving the kitchen to ensure they meet Iron Hill quality and presentation standards
- Verify that plates are properly garnished, portioned, and prepared according to menu specifications
- Ensure all components of each order are complete before releasing to food runners or servers
- Assist with final plate assembly and finishing touches when necessary
Station Management
- Set up, organize, and maintain the expo station for efficient service
- Ensure adequate supplies of plates, garnishes, condiments, and service items
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace throughout the shift
- Assist with opening and closing procedures including restocking and general housekeeping tasks
Team Support
- Communicate clearly with kitchen staff, food runners, and servers to ensure smooth service execution
- Coordinate with managers or food runners when additional support is needed
- Assist with light food preparation, desserts, or finishing items when required
- Delegate tasks when appropriate to maintain efficient kitchen flow
Physical Requirements
The physical demands listed below are representative of those required to perform the essential functions of this position.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time (6+ hours per shift)
- Ability to lift and carry items up to 20–30 pounds, including plates, small equipment, and dishware
- Frequent reaching, bending, and light lifting while assembling orders and stocking items
- Ability to carry and handle multiple plates of food safely
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume restaurant environment

Qualifications
- Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively coordinate between front and back of house teams
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple orders simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
- Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy and quality of every order
- Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and efficient workstation
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds safely
- Basic math skills and order accuracy awareness
- Familiarity with restaurant POS and management systems preferred
- Understanding of food safety, sanitation, and restaurant safety procedures
- Ability to obtain and maintain required food handler certification if applicable
- Friendly and professional interactions with all employees and guests
- Ability to work collaboratively to maintain a positive and efficient service environment
- Strong time management skills and ability to remain calm during busy service periods
Communication & Language Skills
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
- Ability to communicate clearly with kitchen staff, servers, managers, and guests
- Ability to provide clear instructions and updates during service to support efficient operations
