Job Description
A deckhand, under the direction of the mate, will perform any combination of the following duties: handle lines to moor the vessel to dock, locks, or another vessel; rig towing lines; sweep decks using a broom, brush or mop; stand lookout watches while the vessel is underway; load or unload materials and supplies from docks or other vessels; paint decks and superstructure of the vessel using a chipper, scraper, and/or brush, paint roller, or spray gun; lubricate machinery and equipment; splice and repair wire cables and ropes using hand tools; fuel equipment; examine cables that hold barges and vessels in tow and, using a ratchet, tighten cables to ensure barges and vessel are snug; and check barges and barge void tanks for leakage or damage.
