Kamehameha Schools Kapalama Campus High School is looking for 6 Facilitators to join the Ku Mauna team! The program is set to run from July 20 - August 9.

Job Summary

"Ku Mauna" is the annual KS Kapalama Freshman Student Orientation. Facilitators will be responsible for providing guidance and supervision to incoming ninth graders and alaka'i haumana (student leaders).

Essential Responsibilities

  • Facilitates experiential low and high-risk activities in small and large student groups, ensuring safety of all participants.
  • Works collaboratively with other facilitators and alaka'i haumana to integrate core ethical Hawaiian values such as malama kekahi (mutual care and trust) in all experiential activities.
  • Promptly and professionally handles emergency situations involving students and/or staff, ensuring the health and well-being of all.
  • Ensures that all students requiring medical attention are seen by program nurse including those on medication.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Prior experience with similarly aged youth (Gr. 7-9).
  • Desire & ability to inspire students with diverse backgrounds & trust levels.
  • Effective debriefing & classroom management skills to process positive & negative behaviors with aloha.
  • Good communication skills to connect with a variety of audiences (i.e., students, parents, teachers, administrators).
  • Good organizational planning skills to successfully carry out program activities and goals.
  • Able to perform & prioritize multiple tasks in small & large groups.
  • Able to manage conflict involving staff, students, &/or parents.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient or fluent in 'olelo Hawaii (Hawaiian language).
  • Bachelors Degree in Counseling, Education, Hawaiian Studies, or related fields from a nationally-accredited college or university.
  • Grounded knowledge & recent application of culturally-responsive teaching pedagogies (i.e. Moenaha, Na Honua Mauli Ola, etc.) as well as of KS Kula Hawaii Working Exit Outcomes (WEO).
  • Knowledge of KS traditional songs, oli, & Hawaiian protocol.
  • Knowledge of & sensitivity to Hawaiian culture & Christian values.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently sit, perform desk based computer tasks and grasp light/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, write by hand, and lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach/work about shoulder, grasp forcefully.

Working Conditions

  • Work is conducted in an office environment but the purpose of the work may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at regular business hours but evening and weekend hours may be required to meet goals and objectives.
