Family Practice / General Medicine Physician – Walk-In & Urgent Care

Location

Pinon, Arizona (Navajo Nation / Chinle Service Unit, Indian Health Service) — with occasional coverage at Chinle Comprehensive Health Care Facility's ER/Urgent Care and other Navajo IHS facilities within the Chinle Service Unit

About the Role

Bighorn Ridgerunners is hiring a Family Practice / General Medicine Physician to provide walk-in urgent care and outpatient services at Pinon Health Center, an Indian Health Service (IHS) outpatient clinic serving the Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona. This contract supports the Pinon Health Center Outpatient Department, including the Urgent Care and Teen Clinic.

What You'll Do

  • Provide walk-in urgent and acute care for a wide spectrum of conditions, including sepsis, MI, lacerations, fractures, abdominal pain, glycemic emergencies, psychiatric presentations, respiratory conditions, pediatric illness, and renal dysfunction
  • Interview and examine patients, review medical history, order or perform diagnostic tests, and direct treatment or referral
  • Serve as a physician member of the code team for "code blue" / medical emergency activations
  • Conduct outpatient visits, adjust treatment plans, and counsel patients on chronic and acute conditions
  • Refer patients to appropriate specialty or higher-level-of-care facilities when services aren't available on-site
  • Collaborate with Community Health Nurses, Social Workers, Health Educators, and other allied health staff
  • Document all care in the Chinle Service Unit (CSU) electronic health record system in a timely, compliant manner
  • Rotate into Teen Clinic and/or Urgent Care duty sections as needed

What You'll Need

  • Completion of an accredited Family Practice or General Medicine physician training program, with at least 6 months of experience in the specialty (or CSU Credentials Committee/Contracting Officer approval); no service lapse longer than 6 consecutive months in the 6 months before starting
  • Board certification (or Board Eligibility) with the appropriate medical board
  • Active, unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
  • Current, unrestricted DEA registration (Schedules II–V)
  • Current BLS certification (required); ACLS, PALS, and ATLS highly recommended
  • Valid state driver's license (if required for the position)
  • Fitness-for-duty certification and up-to-date immunizations (Hepatitis A & B, MMR, Varicella, Tdap, annual TB test, annual influenza vaccine; meningococcal vaccination if applicable)
  • Ability to pass a Level I/Level II federal background investigation and fingerprinting (OPM eQIP), per the Indian Health Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act
  • At least 3 current professional references from healthcare providers familiar with your clinical practice (one from a Chief of Staff, Medical Director, or Immediate Supervisor — or residency program director/service chief if newly graduated)
  • Strong English communication skills and cultural sensitivity working with American Indian and Alaska Native communities
  • Basic computer/EHR proficiency

Compensation & Schedule

Competitive pay, commensurate with experience. Regular Tour of Duty is 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., Monday–Friday (40 hours/week); Pinon Health Center is closed on federal holidays (unpaid). Occasional hours beyond 5:00 p.m. may be needed for patient care needs; overtime paid at the higher hourly rate, typically capped at 2 additional hours/week. 

Nurse Practitioner – Pediatrics / Walk-In Care

This nonpersonal services contract supports the Pinon Health Center Outpatient Department, including the Urgent Care and Teen Clinic.

What You'll Do
