Job Description
Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse (L&D RN) to provide comprehensive care to antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn patients. The RN will be responsible for patient assessment, fetal monitoring, labor support, medication administration, newborn stabilization, and postpartum care while ensuring the highest standards of maternal and neonatal safety. The ideal candidate will have strong clinical judgment, the ability to respond to obstetric emergencies, and flexibility to float between departments and local facilities within a 20-mile radius.
Work Environment:
- Must be flexible to float between departments and nearby locations within 20 miles.
- Fast-paced Labor & Delivery, Mother-Baby, and Newborn care setting.
Responsibilities:
Antepartum Care:
- Assess and triage obstetric patients greater than 20 weeks gestation.
- Utilize obstetric triage acuity tools to determine patient needs.
- Perform maternal and fetal assessments.
- Evaluate labor progression, preterm labor symptoms, rupture of membranes, vaginal bleeding, decreased fetal movement, preeclampsia symptoms, and other high-risk obstetric conditions.
- Stabilize patients with emergency medical conditions and coordinate delivery or transfer to higher level care when required.
Intrapartum Care:
- Provide labor assessment, monitoring, and direct patient care during labor and delivery.
- Perform fetal monitoring and interpret fetal heart rate patterns.
- Prepare and support patients for vaginal or cesarean delivery.
- Administer medications including Pitocin, Magnesium Sulfate, Misoprostol, Methergine, Hemabate, Terbutaline, antihypertensive medications, insulin, and other prescribed therapies.
- Assist with emergency obstetric interventions and immediate newborn stabilization.
Postpartum & Newborn Care:
- Provide comprehensive care for postpartum patients following vaginal and cesarean deliveries.
- Perform newborn assessments and routine newborn care.
- Administer newborn medications including Hepatitis B vaccine, Vitamin K, Erythromycin, antibiotics, and other prescribed treatments.
- Assist with hearing screenings, laboratory collections, IV starts, circumcision support, phototherapy, hypoglycemia management, neonatal withdrawal care, and stabilization of critically ill newborns awaiting transport.
Required Qualifications:
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN).
- Current Registered Nurse license in the State of New Mexico or a Compact State.
- Minimum two (2) years of current Labor & Delivery nursing experience.
- Current BLS certification.
- Current NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification.
- AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring certification.
- BLS certification must be obtained through the American Heart Association (AHA), American Health and Safety, or approved provider.
- Ability to successfully pass the BCA competency assessment during the first week of assignment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Epic EMR (training available if needed).
- Previous experience in high-acuity Labor & Delivery and Mother-Baby units.
