Job Description
Director of Operations – Commercial ConstructionLocation: Orange County, CACompensation: $150,000–$200,000+ base salary + performance-based bonuses + full benefits package, 401(k), company vehicle/truck, and credit card
Position OverviewThis role calls for a seasoned operations leader with deep experience in commercial construction, with commercial roofing experience considered a strong plus. The ideal candidate has held senior leadership roles overseeing field production across a diverse range of project types, including ground-up construction, tenant improvements, re-roofs, and service/repair work. They are comfortable managing multiple projects simultaneously, often varying in size, scope, and complexity, while maintaining both a high-level operational perspective and hands-on involvement when needed.
This individual provides direct oversight of superintendents and foremen, staying actively engaged in day-to-day problem-solving while driving accountability around schedule, budget, and quality. They are highly skilled in tracking project performance in real time, using key metrics and proactive decision-making to keep projects on track. Success in this role also depends on the ability to build, develop, and optimize teams—whether scaling operations from the ground up or improving existing structures—with a strong focus on recruiting, mentoring, and retaining top field talent.
The Director of Operations plays a key role in pre-construction, partnering with estimating and sales teams to review bids, identify scope gaps, mitigate risk, and contribute to execution planning. They bring a proven ability to navigate complex projects with multiple stakeholders, tight timelines, and logistical challenges, stepping in when necessary to drive projects to successful completion.
A strong commitment to safety and compliance is essential, with experience reinforcing jobsite safety culture, ensuring adherence to regulations, and leading training initiatives. This leader will also champion continuous improvement, implementing best practices, improving workflows, and introducing innovative approaches to enhance operational efficiency and overall project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Production Planning & ExecutionOversee and manage production schedules across all active projects, ensuring efficient execution from start to finish. Establish operational strategies for complex jobs, align staffing plans for superintendents and foremen, and maintain accountability for quality control and timely completion. Partner with pre-construction teams to evaluate project risks, logistics, and execution strategies, and conduct site visits and final inspections as needed.
Field Leadership & DevelopmentLead and develop field teams with a focus on performance, accountability, and continuous improvement. Serve as a key resource for superintendents and foremen, providing guidance on jobsite challenges while implementing training programs to elevate technical and leadership capabilities.
Subcontractor & Vendor ManagementOversee subcontractor relationships, including scope definition, negotiations, and performance management. Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure clear expectations and strong execution, while evaluating long-term partnership opportunities.
Safety & ComplianceDrive company-wide safety initiatives, ensuring all projects adhere to regulatory standards and internal policies. Conduct regular audits, lead safety planning efforts, and promote a culture of accountability and awareness across all job sites.
Technical Problem Solving & Operations OversightStep in to resolve complex field issues, analyze underperforming projects, and implement corrective actions. Lead root cause analysis efforts and develop processes to prevent repeat challenges while improving overall operational performance.
Operational Excellence & InnovationContinuously evaluate processes, technologies, and industry best practices to improve efficiency, scalability, and project outcomes. Identify opportunities for innovation across construction methods, systems, and workflows, including roofing where applicable.
