University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus Department: Surgery

Job Title: Finance & Accounting Manager

Job Summary:

This opportunity represents an opportunity to have significant impact to the operational and financial strength of the Department of Surgery. By centralizing financial oversight, strengthening compliance, and improving procurement and reporting processes, this role will enhance transparency, accountability, and strategic decision-making across the department. The position will provide critical support to faculty and administrative teams by streamlining workflows, improving access to financial guidance, and ensuring consistent application of University and CU Medicine policies. In addition, the focus on process improvement, staff development, and cross-functional collaboration will create greater operational efficiency and sustainability, ultimately allowing the Department of Surgery to better support its clinical, research, and educational missions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and oversee Office of the Chair financial operations across multiple funding sources, ensuring accurate stewardship of state, gift, auxiliary, agency, and CU Medicine accounts.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly and ad hoc financial reports, including budget-to-actual reviews, forecasting, and annual budget development for University and CU Medicine systems.
  • Monitor departmental financial activity to ensure alignment with approved budgets, identify variances, and provide proactive recommendations for fiscal planning.
  • Review and approve procurement, travel, and expense transactions within CU Marketplace, Concur, and COR360 while ensuring compliance with University and CU Medicine policies.
  • Provide expert guidance on procurement methods, expense allowability, reimbursements, and resolution of complex financial and policy-related issues.
  • Serve as a key liaison with CU Finance, CU Medicine, and the Dean's Office to support policy interpretation, compliance, and efficient resolution of financial matters.
  • Deliver financial and procurement guidance, training, and operational support to faculty, staff, and administrators across the Department of Surgery.
  • Lead efforts to improve financial processes, reporting tools, dashboards, and workflow efficiencies to strengthen operational effectiveness and transparency.
  • Supervise and support finance staff by coordinating workloads, providing training, and ensuring timely, accurate completion of departmental financial operations.

Work Location:

Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 3 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Four (4) years of professional experience in finance, accounting, budgeting, or related field.

A combination of education and related technical/military/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five (5) or more years of experience in a financial role within a university or health care institution
  • Experience with University of Colorado and/or CU Medicine financial systems (PeopleSoft Finance, COGNOS/CU Data, A2E, Concur, CU Marketplace, COR360).
  • Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, and account reconciliation.
  • Experience providing guidance on procurement and expense policies.
  • Experience with Smartsheet.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of finance and accounting principles, budgeting practices, and financial reporting.
  • Familiarity with procurement policies and expense compliance requirements.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures in a practical, consistent manner.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work across all levels of the organization.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with financial or reporting systems.
  • Ability to identify opportunities for process improvement and support implementation of solutions.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range for this position has been established as $67,133-$89,959.

The above salary range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
