GBA’s Fire Protection & Life Safety Engineering group is looking for an engineer to join our Lenexa, KS office.
Our Fire Protection & Life Safety engineers work within an integrated team of architects, engineers, commissioning specialists, project managers, and construction managers on variety of project types primarily within the life sciences, mission critical, and industrial markets.

What You’ll Do
Depending on experience, lead or assist in code consulting, planning, design, and commissioning of fire suppression systems, fire detection & alarm systems, life safety systems, and hazardous material storage and use.
- Draft and model in AutoCAD and Revit.
- Prepare and review specifications.
- Perform hydraulic calculations.
- Review shop drawings and calculations.
- Conduct review of other firm’s designs for third-party commissioning, peer review, or permitting.
- Navigate, teach, and apply NFPA, ICC, and FM Global codes and standards.
- Track schedules and check in with project managers for assigned projects to balance several projects simultaneously.
- Attend project meetings and coordinate with team members of other engineering disciplines.
- Visit job sites to verify existing conditions, observe construction progress, witness acceptance testing, and conduct third-party permitting inspections - approximately 5% to 10% of the time depending on current projects.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or other applicable Engineering degrees.
- 7+ years of experience in fire alarm, sprinkler, and life safety design.
- Passed the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Exam.
- PE license is preferred but not required. Expectation is that hire will pursue PE upon obtaining necessary work experience.
- Working experience in AutoCAD and/or Revit.
- Capacity to deal with frequent schedule changes, delays, and or/unexpected events.
- Excellent and professional written and verbal communication; excellent reading comprehension and as detail oriented as possible.
Travel
This position requires occasional overnight travel with weekend trips home.
