- Standard business hours 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Hours may vary based on business need.
Responsibilities
The Fleet Services Mechanic operates, repairs, sets up, and maintains City vehicles and equipment. In addition, this position provides advice on equipment conditions for replacement and responds to any emergency situations as needed. The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are:
- Specializes in either light duty or heavy equipment. Performs diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and major repairs to multiple component systems including engines, drive trains, brakes, electrical, and all associated computer controls.
- Diagnoses and repairs hydraulic systems. Performs welding and minor fabrication.
- Acts as a mentor to new employees and provides on the job training to seasonal staff and monitors their performance as required. Leads projects as directed.
- Maintains accurate and complete records of all maintenance activities, identifies parts, and supplies required using fleet management software.
- Required to report for all Public Works snow-clearing efforts, as needed.
While these areas are the primary focus of this position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.
Requirements
- Associates degree or two-year technical certificate in a related field or a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience is required.
- Emergency vehicle upfitting and repair experience is preferred.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL-Class B minimum) with air brakes and tanker endorsements or able to obtain within 11 months of hire is required. License and certification costs funded through the City.
- State of MN D.O.T. Certified Commercial Vehicle Inspector or obtain certification within six months of employment is required. License and certification costs funded through the City.
- Heavy trucks, electric vehicle knowledge, and diesel experience are preferred.
- Must have the ability to lift/carry/pull at least 50 pounds frequently, 50-75 pounds occasionally. Work is performed under typical garage and yard conditions and requires continual mental and physical effort. Safety for oneself, coworkers and others is paramount. Occasionally needs to work outside in unfavorable weather conditions.
- Candidates must successfully complete and pass the City's evaluation of the pre-employment process prior to their first day of employment. Pre-employment processes for this position include professional reference checks, background check, driver's license check (must have valid driver's license and excellent driving record), CDL process (if applicable), pre-employment physical exam, work history verification and education verification.
