POSITION SUMMARY:

As part of a collaborative, dynamic, multidisciplinary team, the Float Pool RN will provide nursing care to a wide variety of patients within the hospital. The Float Pool RN will be a member of a nursing team that provides direct patient care to a specific unit within the hospital based on staffing needs. The Float Pool RN may be required to start their shift in one unit and then based on need/change in census and acuity be transferred or moved to a different unit to meet organizational requirements. The Float Pool RN will maintain competencies in all areas as assigned by department leadership Utilizing the nursing process, the Float RN provides safe, effective, and compassionate care with a focus on restoring and promoting patient health and well-being and partners with patients, families, and the care team in the planning and coordination of care. The Float Pool RN must have the ability to perform standard nursing duties across various hospital units encompassing care within the Medical-Surgical Unit, the Progressive Care Unit, the Emergency Department, and Post-Partum care in the Birthing Center.

DEPARTMENT SCOPE OF SERVICE:

  • A Nursing Resource Department scope of service encompasses various job duties including Clinical Educators, Float Pool RNs, and Patient Safety Technicians. This department provides flexible patient care, education, and management across various hospital units. Float Pool RNs are assigned from a central pool to wherever staffing needs are the greatest.
  • The Nursing Resource Department plays a vital role in supporting clinical excellence, professional development, and flexible patient care throughout the hospital. This department encompasses Clinical Educators, Float Pool RNs, and Patient Safety Technicians, each contributing to a well-rounded approach to patient care, staff education, and operational efficiency.
  • The Float Pool RN provides flexible, high-quality nursing care across multiple hospital units, ensuring adequate staffing and continuity of care in response to fluctuating patient needs. Float Pool RNs are a critical resource, assigned based on census, acuity, and staffing demands, with a primary focus on supporting the Emergency Department (ED), Progressive Care Unit (PCU), and the Birthing Center (BC).
  • In the Emergency Department (ED), Float Pool RNs assist in the treatment of patients with acute conditions. They work alongside the ED team to provide interventions, administer medications, and support the ED team during trauma and resuscitation efforts.
  • Within the Progressive Care Unit (PCU), Float Pool RNs care for patients requiring close monitoring and specialized interventions, such as those with cardiac conditions, respiratory compromise, or post-surgical recovery needs. They manage complex patient cases, monitor vital signs, administer IV medications, and provide support for patients transitioning between critical and medical-surgical care.
  • In the Birthing Center (BC), Float Pool RNs contribute to postpartum care by monitoring maternal and newborn well-being, assist in providing lactation support, manage the care of the post-surgical recovery for maternal and standard surgical patients, and educate patients on postpartum/post-surgical care and infant health.
  • Float Pool RNs maintain competencies in all assigned areas and are expected to integrate seamlessly into each unit's workflow, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care. Their adaptability and clinical expertise allow the hospital to optimize staffing, enhance patient outcomes, and maintain efficient.

Requirements

EDUCATION:

  • Graduate of accredited RN program.

EXPERIENCE/SKILL SETS:

  • Minimum of 2-years of RN experience in acute care.
  • Critical care experience preferred

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION(S):

  • Registered Nurse currently licensed by the State of Vermont
  • BLS Healthcare Provider status
  • ACLS within 6 months of hire
  • PALS within 6 months of hire
  • NRP within 6 months of hire

OSHA CATEGORY:

OSHA Category I - Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues require use of techniques of Universal Precautions as evidenced with blood borne pathogens standards.

The listed range represents the pay scale reasonably expected for a successful candidate based on factors such as relevant experience, education, internal equity, and market competitiveness. Final compensation will be determined during the hiring process.
