Full Time Operating Room Technician

Connected Health Care is partnering with a healthcare organization to recruit a Full Time Operating Room Technician for an exciting opportunity in Grants, New Mexico. This position is ideal for an experienced OR Technician, Surgical Technologist, or surgical services professional who is comfortable working in a fast-paced operating room environment and supporting surgeons and the surgical team during procedures.
The Operating Room Technician assists with surgical procedures by preparing and maintaining the sterile field, organizing instruments and supplies, passing equipment to the surgical team, assisting with patient preparation and positioning, maintaining proper aseptic technique, and supporting the operating room before, during, and after procedures.
Job Description
- Assist the surgical team during basic operating procedures.
- Prepare and maintain the sterile field according to surgeon preference cards.
- Arrange, organize, and inventory sterile instruments, equipment, and supplies needed for surgical procedures.
- Follow proper surgical aseptic techniques at all times.
- Recognize and immediately report any break in sterile technique.
- Perform appropriate surgical hand scrubbing, gowning, and gloving procedures.
- Properly gown and glove members of the surgical team.
- Assist with appropriate surgical draping of patients.
- Pass instruments and other surgical equipment to the surgeon in the prescribed manner.
- Participate in sponge, needle, and instrument counts before, during, and after procedures to help ensure patient safety.
- Properly identify, preserve, and prepare operative specimens for analysis.
- Maintain awareness of the sterile field throughout surgical procedures.
- Ensure the patient's skin is appropriately cleaned of blood and other solutions before final dressings are applied as directed by the surgeon.
- Protect drains and surgical packings from dislodgement.
- Remove surgical drapes according to established procedures.
- Properly dispose of sharps, needles, solutions, trash, and linen.
- Assist with transferring patients safely from the operating table to a stretcher.
- Clean and wash surgical instruments in preparation for sterilization.
- Follow universal precautions and appropriate infection-control practices for all patients.
- Open sterile supplies before and during surgical cases as needed.
- Assist with maintaining adequate supplies and equipment throughout procedures.
- Perform required daily equipment and sterilization checks.
- Complete the Bowie-Dick Test to verify effective air removal from pre-vacuum autoclaves.
- Operate the flash autoclave when necessary to process dropped instruments or other items required for a surgical case.
- Tie gowns of scrubbed surgical personnel.
- Adjust surgical lights and assist with operating room setup.
- Assist with circulating duties when two circulators are required, under the direct supervision of an RN.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe operating room environment.
- Assist with preparation and cleanup of the operating theater.
- Maintain appropriate standards for surgical safety, infection prevention, and patient care.
Education and Certification Requirements
- Completion of an Operating Room Technician or Surgical Technologist program desired.
- Current CPR certification required.
- Certified Surgical Technologist CST certification is desirable but not required.
- Training or education in surgical technology, operating room procedures, or a related healthcare field preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of surgical aseptic technique and sterile field procedures.
- Ability to perform essential operating room functions in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
Additional Requirements
- Must be able to participate in an on-call rotation.
- Must be able to assume an on-call position and report to the hospital within 15 minutes when required.
- Ability to remain calm and effective in the high-stress operating room environment.
- Demonstrated maturity and professionalism appropriate to the demands of surgical services.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure during surgical procedures.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with surgeons, nurses, surgical technologists, anesthesia professionals, and other members of the healthcare team.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow applicable healthcare standards and policies.
