Job Description
COMPENSATION: $65,559-$113,636 Annually; depending upon experience
Brooklyn Waldorf School seeks a part-time (50%) Games and Movement Teacher for grades 1–4. This role focuses on cooperative games, movement, and outdoor play rather than competitive sports.
The Games and Movement Teacher leads structured, developmentally appropriate movement classes that support students’ physical coordination, social skills, emotional regulation, and confidence. Through rhythmic movement, group games, and age-appropriate physical activities, the teacher helps students build balance, strength, agility, cooperation, and joy in movement.
Classes take place both indoors and outdoors, year-round, and are designed to complement the classroom curriculum and support the Waldorf educational emphasis on educating the whole child—head, heart, and hands. The ideal candidate is warm, confident, physically active, and comfortable leading groups of young children in collaborative, non-competitive movement experiences.
- Plan and teach regular movement and games classes for students in grades 1–4, similar in structure to elementary physical education and grounded in Waldorf pedagogy.
- Design age-appropriate lessons that include warm-ups, skill-building activities, and group games to develop coordination, balance, strength, agility, endurance, and spatial awareness.
- Introduce movement skills through rhythmic, imaginative, and story-based activities that engage students and support healthy physical development.
- Observe and support students’ gross motor development, offering guidance and adaptations to meet a range of abilities and developmental stages.
- Establish clear expectations for safety, respectful movement, and spatial awareness, maintaining a safe and organized learning environment.
- Lead indoor and outdoor classes in all seasons, fostering resilience, physical confidence, and enjoyment of movement and nature.
- Use cooperative games and structured group play to support social development, including teamwork, turn-taking, fairness, focus, and self-regulation.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; background in Movement Education, Physical Education, or a related field preferred.
- Experience teaching elementary-age children, ideally in a Waldorf or experiential learning setting.
- Waldorf teacher training or Spacial Dynamics training preferred but not required.
- Strong classroom management and interpersonal communication skills.
- Enthusiasm for outdoor education and a love of play and movement with children.
