Job Description
Position Summary
The Gas Operator is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of natural gas distribution systems. This role supports safe and compliant operations across pipeline construction, service lines, and infrastructure projects. The Gas Operator ensures all work is executed in accordance with regulatory standards, company protocols, and industry best practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, and repair natural gas pipelines, mains, and service lines
- Perform trenching, pipe laying, fusion, and tie-ins for gas systems
- Locate existing underground utilities prior to excavation
- Conduct pressure testing, leak detection, and system inspections
- Operate equipment such as excavators, skid steers, and tampers as needed
- Read and interpret blueprints, maps, and utility drawings
- Ensure proper installation of fittings, valves, regulators, and meters
- Perform backfilling, compaction, and site restoration
- Maintain accurate daily reports, logs, and documentation
- Follow all safety procedures, including PPE requirements and hazard identification
- Coordinate with supervisors, inspectors, and utility representatives on-site
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Prior experience in gas utility, pipeline construction, or underground utilities preferred
- Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred but not required depending on role)
- Ability to obtain and maintain Operator Qualification (OQ) certifications
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety standards
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Strong work ethic with the ability to follow direction and work independently
Preferred Certifications
- Operator Qualification (OQ) Certification
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
- Confined Space Entry
- Trenching & Excavation Safety
- Fusion Certification (if applicable)
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 50–75 lbs regularly
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work in trenches for extended periods
- Comfortable working around heavy equipment and active construction zones
Work Environment
- Outdoor construction sites, roadways, and utility corridors
- Exposure to noise, dust, and varying weather conditions
- Fast-paced, safety-critical environment
