Gastroenterology Hospitalist (MD/DO)
Position SummaryThe Gastroenterology Hospitalist provides inpatient-focused care for patients with acute and chronic gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary conditions. This role emphasizes hospital-based consultation, inpatient management, and procedural care while collaborating closely with hospitalists, surgeons, intensivists, and other specialists to ensure high-quality, coordinated patient care.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide inpatient gastroenterology consultations and ongoing management for hospitalized patients
- Evaluate, diagnose, and treat acute and complex gastrointestinal conditions, including GI bleeding, liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, and biliary disorders
- Perform inpatient diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures as indicated
- Manage pre- and post-procedure care, including monitoring for complications
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including internal medicine, surgery, critical care, radiology, and nursing
- Interpret laboratory results, imaging studies, pathology reports, and endoscopic findings
- Participate in inpatient rounding, handoffs, and care coordination
- Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and procedures
- Document all patient encounters and procedures accurately and timely in the medical record
- Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical governance initiatives
- Adhere to evidence-based clinical guidelines, hospital policies, and regulatory standards
Qualifications
- Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited medical school
- Completion of an accredited Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship
- Board eligible or board certified in Gastroenterology
- Active state medical license or eligibility for licensure
- Strong clinical decision-making, procedural, and communication skills
- Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced inpatient environment
Work Environment
- Inpatient hospital setting only
- Schedule may include block scheduling, call coverage, nights, weekends, or holidays depending on service needs
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods during procedures and rounds
- Manual dexterity for endoscopic and bedside procedures
- Ability to move throughout hospital units and procedural areas
