Position Summary
The General Accountant II is an accounting role with a primary focus on member billing. This position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of billing at Bartholomew County REMC. The role applies accounting principles to billing activity, including reviewing billing data, validating calculations, applying rate schedules, and supporting industrial and specialized billing.
While prior billing experience is helpful, it is not required. A strong accounting background is essential, and the cooperative will provide training on billing systems, processes, and utility-specific requirements.
In addition to billing responsibilities, the General Accountant II provides accounting support across banking, accounts payable, payroll backup, financial reporting, and tax reporting, in accordance with GAAP and RUS accounting standards.
Key Responsibilities
Billing & Banking Operations (Primary Focus)
- Review and process member billing accounts to ensure accuracy and data integrity
- Apply rate schedules and verify billing calculations
- Coordinate monthly and annual billing schedules with internal teams and NISC
- Support industrial billing, including review of wholesale billing information
- Work closely with the Meter Technician to verify meter reads and resolve discrepancies
- Maintain billing reports, kWh usage spreadsheets, and related analyses
- Support monthly and annual billing close activities
- Process and reconcile daily cash receipts, including electronic payments, ACH, bank drafts, lockbox, and other payment methods
- Prepare and post daily and monthly bank transactions related to member billing
- Perform bank reconciliations and investigate timing or payment discrepancies
Additional Accounting Responsibilities
- Provide backup to payroll accounts payable, and capital credits functions
- Assist with tax reporting and related compliance activities
- Support other accounting operations and special projects as assigned
Qualifications
A strong accounting foundation is required; prior billing experience is preferred but not required, as training on billing systems and processes will be provided.
Proficiency in accounting areas such as financial reporting, account analysis and reconciliation, accounts payable, banking, and tax reporting is required
Experience with budgeting, capital credits, and payroll is preferred but not required
Education
- Associate’s degree in Accounting (or related field) from a two‑year college or technical school or 3–5 years of related accounting experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance with 3–5 years of related experience is preferred
Skills & Competencies
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Access) and the ability to learn and master company‑specific systems
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and the ability to apply them accurately in a transactional environment
- Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
- Demonstrated judgment, integrity, and ethical decision-making
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to listen, analyze issues, and communicate solutions clearly
- Professional, customer‑focused approach in interactions with members and coworkers
- Self‑motivated with a continuous‑improvement mindset
- Proficiency in English required; ability to communicate in a second language is a plus
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Ability to travel as required for REMC meetings (including occasional overnight travel)
