POSITION SUMMARY:
The Public Relations (PR) Manager, under the direction of the General Counsel, develops public relations strategies and associated communications to build, manage, and enhance Sault Tribe’s public image, cultivates media relationships, creates public relations campaigns, writes and distributes public relations materials and social media content aligning communication efforts with organizational goals, handles crisis communication, organizes public relations events and activities, monitors media coverage, public perception, trends and Sault Tribe’s public presence. This role works closely with the Tribal Board of Directors, Governmental Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Division Directors, and external partners to plan fund, and deliver complex, high-impact projects.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
- Develop and implement comprehensive PR strategies to promote services and maintain a positive public image, manage crises to mitigate negative publicity, plan and execute PR campaigns and communication strategies, which align with organizational goals.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with media professionals, journalists, bloggers and influencers to secure media coverage.
- Develop, write and distribute press releases, speeches, articles, media kits, social media content, newsletters, digital communications, Tribal literature, promotional and other marketing materials.
- Develop and implement crisis communication plans to mitigate reputational damage, manage PR aspect of potential crises, respond to negative press, and protect the Tribe's reputation.
- Organize and coordinate press conferences, media interviews, public appearances, exhibitions, promotional events and activities.
- Track media coverage, analyze public perception through reports, monitor social, economic, and political trends while overseeing Tribe’s presence on social media.
- Prepare, monitor and modify annual budget, analyze financial statements, develop financial projections, and take corrective measures to ensure budget compliance.
- Prepare and present verbal and written PR reports and presentations to executives and Tribal Board of Directors, as required.

CONTACTS: Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor, Tribal Board of Directors, Executives, managers in other departments, tribal and community members, media professionals, journalists, bloggers and influencers, local, regional, state, and federal governments and agencies.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Position sedentary primarily sitting and lifting a maximum of 25 pounds. Physical factors include constant use of near vision, typing; frequent walking, sitting, kneeling, use of midrange/color vision; occasional standing, carrying/lifting, pushing/pulling, climbing, stooping, crawling, reaching, manual handling, use of smell, far vision, depth perception, field of vision, travel and bending. Working conditions include occasional exposure to noise. Potential hazards include constant computer use and occasional exposure to electric shock high exposed places, chemicals, and equipment.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Communications or related field required, Masters preferred.
Experience: Five years of experience in public relations, marketing, communications or related field required.
Certification/License: Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver’s license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with the Sault Tribe’s Drug-Free Workplace Policy which may include random drug tests.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of government communication standards, public records compliance, accessibility requirements, and culturally appropriate engagement. Demonstrated skills in photography and videography, including editing; experience with graphic design software preferred. Excellent written communication skills with strong attention to accuracy, grammar, and tone. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications; experience with website management systems and digital marketing tools preferred. Ability to present a professional appearance and represent the Tribe in a positive manner. Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion, confidentiality, and professionalism. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with Tribal leadership, staff, members, and the public. Experience working with diverse populations; experience working with Native American communities preferred. Must be capable of public speaking and conducting formal and informal meetings and conferences. Must be able to handle, resolve, and direct multiple issues and projects simultaneously. Must have strong organizational skills. Ability to work with minimal supervision and work extended hours when needed including evenings, weekend and travel as needed. Must maintain strict confidentiality. Native American preferred.
