Grand Rapids - Nurse Extern - Nursing Students Externship

What the Nurse Externwill do:

• Respond to patient call lights for assistance or by rounding 
• Collaborates with members of the health care team to ensure consistency and high-quality patient care and promotes productiveemployee relations among staff members.
• Assists the registered nurse by observing and reporting on patient conditions, recording/charting patient information andinteracting with patient and family members. Reports changes in patient medical and/or emotional condition to the registered nurse.Documents interventions and patient responses accurately, completely and timely (real time as per policy). Assists nursing personnelin responding to various emergency patient situations.
• Performs a variety of basic patient care activities under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse which may include, but are notlimited to:
• Nasogastric (NG) tube Insertion
• Maintenance functional activities
• Dressing changes
• ECG
• Maintenance of enteral tubes
• Suctioning
• Blood glucose monitoring
• Assisting with postmortem care
• Phlebotomy
• Initiation of peripheral IV lines and urinary catheterization
• Monitoring and managing patient safety

Nurse Extern Minimum Requirements Include: 

• High School diploma

• Currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited school of nursing. Has successfully completed two clinical semesters of nursing school.
• Preferred Additional requirements of coursework dependent on the area of assignment.

Preferred Requirements include:

• EMT, Paramedic, Nurse aide or CENA experience in a health care setting; acute care experience preferred.
• BCLS - Basic Cardiac Life Support.
