A Group Fitness Instructor at River Place Country Club is be expected to:

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead safe, engaging, and motivating group fitness classes for members of varying fitness levels.
  • Demonstrate proper exercise technique and provide modifications when needed.
  • Plan and deliver well-structured workouts that align with the class format.
  • Foster a welcoming, professional, and inclusive environment.
  • Monitor participant safety and maintain a clean, organized fitness studio.
  • Prepare equipment before class and return it afterward.
  • Encourage member participation and help members achieve their wellness goals.
  • Collaborate with the fitness team to provide an exceptional member experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current nationally recognized Group Fitness or Personal Trainer certification (such as NASM, ACE, ACSM, or AFAA).
  • CPR/AED certification.
  • Previous experience teaching group fitness classes.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including mornings, evenings, and weekends.

Teaching an effective group fitness class is about more than leading exercises. A successful instructor creates a safe, engaging, and motivating experience. Key components include:

Preparation

  • Plan the class structure and workout.
  • Know the goals (strength, cardio, flexibility, HIIT, etc.).
  • Have regressions and progressions ready for different fitness levels.

Clear Communication

  • Give concise, easy-to-follow instructions.
  • Use verbal, visual, and physical (if appropriate and with consent) cues.
  • Count down transitions so participants know what's coming next.

Safety

  • Demonstrate proper technique.
  • Emphasize alignment and form over speed or intensity.
  • Encourage participants to work at an appropriate level and stop if they experience pain.
  • Be aware of environmental hazards, hydration, and emergency procedures.

Class Management

  • Start and end on time.
  • Arrange the room for safe movement.
  • Maintain awareness of the entire group, not just the front row.

Motivation and Energy

  • Use positive, encouraging language.
  • Create an inclusive atmosphere where all fitness levels feel welcome.
  • Celebrate effort and progress rather than performance.

Music and Timing

  • Choose music appropriate for the workout and audience.
  • Match movement tempo to the music when applicable.
  • Keep transitions smooth to maintain momentum.

Coaching and Cueing

  • Explain what to do, how to do it, and why it matters.
  • Provide reminders about breathing, posture, and muscle engagement.
  • Anticipate common mistakes and cue corrections before they happen.

Adaptability

  • Modify exercises for beginners, advanced participants, or those with injuries or limitations.
  • Adjust the class based on participant energy, space, equipment, or unexpected circumstances.

Class StructureA balanced class typically includes:

  • Warm-up (5–10 minutes)
  • Main workout
  • Cool-down
  • Stretching and recovery

Professionalism

  • Be punctual and prepared.
  • Continue learning through education and certifications.
  • Build rapport while maintaining professional boundaries.
