Job Description

Head of Design: Beast Classroom

Location: anywhere in the continental US, with ability to travel ~monthly to San Diego (where ~half of the team sits)

We're an elementary math curriculum startup looking for a founding Head of Design who will leverage our world-class math and comic narrative content to shape transformative learning experiences for students and teachers; who will get their hands dirty by executing this vision across digital, print, and classroom touchpoints; and who will lead cross-functionally to elevate design thinking across the company. Read on to learn more!

Our vision

Welcome to Beast Classroom, where students delight in mathematical challenge – playing games, solving puzzles, and exploring rigorous content that demands flexible, creative thinking; where teachers are energized and empowered to teach math; where principals stop by and smile at the signs of a budding math culture; and where there is no ceiling for math excellence.

Our mission

At Beast, we're on a mission to bring this experience to elementary schools everywhere. We're building a K-5 math curriculum based on the beloved Beast Academy comic universe and the rigorous Art of Problem Solving pedagogy that has trained the world's top math students for a generation.

Our challenge

The educational landscape is shifting, but the need is greater than ever for classrooms to be sacred spaces where teachers and students can engage in meaningful learning. To meet this moment, we believe:

  • Teachers need more. They need sophisticated, responsive tools for planning, personalized instruction, and professional development, so they can focus on what they love most: teaching.
  • Students deserve better. They don't need digital babysitters or monotonous problem sets. They need lovingly designed experiences—immersive print workbooks and responsive digital activities that inspire exploration and a positive relationship with challenge.

Why we need you

We have the pieces in place to face this challenge: a world-class curriculum, an immersive comic universe, an enthusiastic and growing community of schools & educators, and mission-aligned backers committed to building a transformative solution. We've built a talented and driven remote-first team on a foundation of transparency, trust, collective ownership, and deep care – and now we're ready to welcome a new product leader.

Now, we need you. As our founding Head of Design, you'll lead the evolution of our unified digital and print experience, helping to bring our vision for joyful, rigorous math to millions of students.

Who you are

  • You care deeply about teachers and students. You love spending time in the trenches, observing classrooms, developing empathy, understanding needs, and translating your insights into lovingly crafted solutions. You value the role of teachers, and you believe that every child deserves to be mathematically challenged.
  • You think holistically and creatively. You see the entire user journey and how our curriculum and product fits in.  You appreciate how teacher and student needs intersect, and you see art and narrative as essential to creating deeply engaging user experiences that flow between print, digital, and classroom spaces.
  • You care deeply about quality and execution. You set a high bar for visual and interactive excellence, and your portfolio and track record showcase this. You believe educational experiences should be as beautiful and polished as the best consumer & enterprise products, and you'll actively support and drive our team to get there.

What you'll do

You will lead the design of our entire product experience, from the first time a teacher opens a lesson plan to the moment a student solves a complex puzzle in their workbook or online. You'll partner directly with leadership to ensure design is a core differentiator for our company.

  • Own our overall interaction & visual design: Establish a unified user experience that spans digital, print, and classroom spaces, both for individual students & teachers and for whole-class journeys.
  • Drive integration between product & creative: Act as the creative bridge between the Beast comic universe, the Beast Classroom brand, and the product experience. You'll ensure the characters and story serve the goals of teaching and learning math.
  • Lead our design function end-to-end: As our first design hire, you'll think big-picture strategy one hour, build AI-powered interactive prototypes the next, and then roll up your sleeves for production design work. You'll inspire collective ownership and trust with Curriculum, Engineering, Product teammates to yield a truly unified solution. And you'll source & manage fractional design and art team members to deliver inspiring and coherent designs using the latest tools and practices.

Exceptional candidates may have:

  • Hybrid experience: expertise in both digital product design and print production.
  • Domain knowledge: a background in elementary education, complex pedagogical products, or game design.
  • Creative range: experience with brand, marketing, and digital art production.

Additional information about the position:

  • Work authorization: applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.; we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time
  • Salary range: $155K-$190K + equity
  • Key benefits: private health, dental, vision, and life insurance; paid time off, including a weeklong company shutdown for winter holidays; 401K plan; flexibility-first culture with quarterly summits for team collaboration & connection
