About Mood

Mood is a category-defining omni-channel hemp brand offering a full product suite across DTC online and retail partners. We are scaling fast and doing it profitably. We win through a premium product experience that brings best-in-class shopping to one of the most highly regulated industries.

Our mission is simple: Enable access to premium hemp products of the highest quality, conveniently. We are still early in our journey, and the right leaders can make a lasting impact.

About the Role

The Head of Legal will be Mood's first in-house counsel and a core member of the leadership team. This leader will build Mood's legal strategy, oversee compliance across manufacturing and distribution, support commercial and vendor relationships, and guide regulatory strategy.

This is a highly cross-functional role requiring a practical, business-minded attorney who can balance speed with risk mitigation and can build scalable processes as Mood accelerates into its next stage of growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Legal Strategy & Leadership
    • Serve as the principal legal advisor to the executive team, and board.
    • Build and lead Mood's in-house legal function, creating scalable processes, templates, and controls.
    • Develop Mood's legal strategy across product, commercial, corporate, regulatory, and compliance matters.
    • Oversee creation and management of company policies, governance standards, and employee-facing guidelines.
  • Regulatory, Product & Compliance
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory regimes relevant to Mood's product categories (e.g., FDA, FTC, DSHEA, GMP, labeling, packaging, claims substantiation).
    • Partner closely with Product, R&D, and Operations on new product development, formulations, testing, and quality/safety standards.
    • Lead legal review of product claims, marketing copy, packaging, and digital content.
    • Develop and maintain compliance frameworks for manufacturing, supply chain, distribution, and retail channels.
  • Commercial & Contracting
    • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts, including:
      • Manufacturer and supplier agreements
      • Distribution and retail agreements
      • Licensing and IP agreements
      • Marketing and partnership contracts
      • Employment and contractor agreements
      • Technology and SaaS contracts
    • Build contract management systems and standardized templates to increase efficiency.
  • Corporate & Governance
    • Advise on corporate structure, equity matters, and governance processes.
    • Support the board on governance, compliance, and fiduciary matters as needed.
  • Risk Management
    • Identify, evaluate, and mitigate legal and regulatory risks across all business lines.
    • Provide guidance on privacy, data protection, cybersecurity, and consumer protection compliance.
    • Build processes for issue escalation, investigations, and dispute resolution.
    • Manage relationships with external counsel for specialized matters.
  • Employment & People
    • Advise the People team on employment law matters, including policies, performance, compensation, benefits, and dispute mitigation.
    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment regulations as the workforce grows.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership Internally and Externally
    • Work tightly with Operations on manufacturing, safety, supply chain, and vendor compliance.
    • Partner with Marketing on claim substantiation, content review, influencer/affiliate agreements, and brand protection.
    • Collaborate with Finance, Product, IT/Data, and Sales on cross-functional legal initiatives.
    • Partner closely without outside counsel where relevant to access specialized expertise

We are looking for someone who has:

  • JD from an accredited law school; admitted to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 10+ years of legal experience, with significant time in-house at a high-growth consumer/CPG or digital brand.
  • Deep experience with regulatory, commercial, and product-related legal issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to build a legal function from zero to one.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and business partnership skills.
  • Strong judgment, pragmatism, and ability to operate in fast-paced, ambiguous environments.
