Job Description

Head Softball Coach

The Head Softball Coach serves as the primary leader and steward of the University of Mary's NCAA Division II Softball program. This position provides strategic leadership, personnel supervision, scholarship management, competitive oversight, fundraising direction, and mission integration for the softball program.The Head Coach is fully responsible for competitive success, culture formation, compliance oversight, and alignment with the University's Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission and the  University’s ‘Greatness Through Virtue’  (GTV) whole-person development model.

Candidates will be invited to demonstrate a willingness to support the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities Include:

    Oversees Scholar-Athlete & Team Athletic SuccessEstablishing and executing the program's competitive vision and multi-year planOverall record and NSIC performanceRegional/NCAA DII finish and trajectoryRecruiting and retaining high-caliber scholar-athletesLeading practice design, game preparation, and player developmentEvaluating competitive progress and implementing performance improvement strategiesSupervising assistant coach in recruiting and player development executionCollaborating effectively within the athletic departmentOversees Scholar-Athlete & Team Academic SuccessMonitoring team GPA and academic benchmarksOversight of academic standing and retentionEnsuring satisfactory academic progressStrategic intervention plans for academically at-risk scholar-athletesMaintaining working knowledge of NCAA Division II eligibility requirementsSetting academic culture expectations for coaching staffOversees Scholar-Athlete & Team ComplianceMaintaining comprehensive knowledge of NCAA, NSIC, and institutional rulesEnsuring recruitment, financial aid, and practice regulations are followedMeeting all compliance deadlinesSupervising assistant coach compliance education documentationOversees Scholar-Athlete Leadership & Whole Person Development
  • Full integration of the ‘Greatness Through Virtue’ model
  • Participation in required formation experiences
  • Oversight of PED course enrollmentAnnual and future GTV integration plansDevelopment of the virtuous leadership and team solidarity
  • Oversees Scholar-Athlete Safety, Health & Well Being
    • Oversight of the athletic training integration
    • Travel standards and team logistics
    • Team policy development and enforcement
    • Collaboration with support services
    • Review of scholar-athlete exit feedback
    • Ensuring equitable experience across both programs
  • Oversees Community Integration & ConnectednessStrategic marketing collaborationSocial media direction (in coordination with athletics communications)Camp developmentFaculty and campus integrationGame-day tradition and developmentCommunity presence and engagement
  • Oversees Program Management
    • Budget management
    • Scholarship allocation and strategy
    • Roster size targets
    • Scheduling
    • Staff supervision and evaluation
    • Faculty coordination
    • Contribution to departmental strategic plan
    • Interdepartmental collaboration
  • Contribute to Athletic FundraisingMeeting or exceeding annual Armada goalsMaintaining a strong Armada CabinetParticipation in flagship fundraising eventsDevelopment of sport-specific fundraising initiativesEngagement with alumni and donors

    Qualifications include:

    • Bachelor’s degree required
    • Masters’ degree preferred
    • A minimum of 3-5 years of previous coaching experience required
    • Upholds and promotes the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary
    • Supports the ongoing implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the apostolic constitution on Catholic colleges and universities
    • Builds a culture of ready and earnest hospitality in the Office of Athletics and throughout the university in accord with Saint Benedict’s admonition that all be received as Christ

    Knowledge and Skills include:

  • Understanding of the ‘Greatness Through Virtue’ core strategies and being able to facilitate the growth of our Scholar-Athletes in the virtues of academic life
  • Must possess a good driving record and pass a background check
  • Working knowledge of NCAA rules, standards, practices, and procedures
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication skills
