Job Description

Pay Rate: $25.64 -$33.33/hourly (Depending on Education)

Sign - On Bonus $2,000.00

Head Start of Baltimore City is a child and family development program serving nearly 500 low-income families in west, south and southwest Baltimore City, for their children to be well prepared when entering kindergarten and thus more successful in school and later in life.

Catholic Charities of Baltimore Head Start is currently seeking a Head Start Teacher who will be responsible for managing the classroom and teaching in a manner that creates a stimulating and constructive environment for the growth, well-being, and development of children. This position establishes a positive and productive relationship with families through engagement in the child and family's strengths in accordance with the goals of Head Start. The work schedule is:

Head Start teacher assignments are based on the needs of the program, including enrollment, staffing levels, and vacancies at each location. Because these needs can change, site placement decisions are finalized during the hiring process to ensure staff are assigned where they are needed most.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensures that students are properly supervised at all times and take appropriate safety precautions for children's well-being.
  • Implements the designated curriculum using guides and other materials that addresses the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional needs of students that is aligned with Head Start Performance Standards. Implements Individualized Education Plans (IEP) and Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSP).
  • Creates and maintains a classroom environment that incorporates the principles of the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS):
  • Emotional Support: Creates and maintains a classroom where children are motivated, nurtured and connected.
  • Classroom Organization: Creates and maintains a classroom where children consistently have activities to do and are interested and engaged in learning tasks.
  • Instructional Support: Implements the curriculum in a manner that effectively supports cognitive and language development.
  • Develops lesson plans that support individualized instruction based on on-going assessment of the progress and accomplishments of each student.
  • Establishes productive collaborative relationships with parents / caregivers with the goal of routine, positive communication between the home and school.
  • Includes families in the educational process, encourage their participation in the Center's activities and serve as a resource by the implementation of regular parent conferences and home visits.
  • Complies with federal, state and local guidelines and with the policies and procedures of the Maryland State Office of Child Care, Head Start and Catholic Charities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Teacher I (508000)

  • Associates degree in Early Childhood Education;
  • Or an Associates degree in a related field and coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education, with an internship or one year of experience teaching preschool age children.
  • Extensive knowledge of childcare principles, procedures and early childhood teaching strategies.

Teacher II (531000)

  • Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education.
  • Or a Bachelor's degree in related field and coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education with one year of experience teaching preschool-age children;
  • Or, Bachelor's degree and 1) has been admitted into the Teach For America program, 2) passed a rigorous early childhood content exam, such as the Praxis II, 3) participated in a Teach For America summer training institute that includes teaching preschool children, 4) and is receiving ongoing professional development and resources from Teach For America's professional staff.
  • Extensive knowledge of childcare principles, procedures and early childhood teaching strategies.

Teacher III (532000)

  • Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE).
  • Or, Master's Degree in related field and coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education with one year of experience teaching preschool-age children.
  • Extensive knowledge of childcare principles, procedures and early childhood teaching strategies.

Certification/Licensure:

  • Teachers (I/II/III) must begin the application for a Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) credential and receive the credential
  • 1) within six months of employment or
  • 2) within one year if no early childhood experience at the time of hire.

REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrates patience and composure when working with children and interacting with parents, fostering positive relationships.
  • Possesses extensive knowledge of childcare philosophies and procedures, ensuring high-quality care.
  • Effectively connecting with children, creating an engaging and enjoyable environment.
  • Utilizes a strong understanding of early childhood teaching strategies to support developmental growth and leaning.
  • Acts with discretion, tact, and professionalism in all situations, maintaining confidentiality and integrity.
  • Requires proficiency in using computer systems and software to perform job function, including but not limited to, basic Windows PC, web browsing (i.e., Chrome, Internet Explorer, etc.), and Microsoft Outlook. Knowledge of other Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, Excel PowerPoint, Teams, and OneDrive is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • No remote or hybrid work availability based on core and essential functions of the position.
  • Remaining in a stationary position, which may involve standing or sitting for extended periods, such as required to complete tasks or duties associated with the role.
  • Adjusting or moving objects up to 40# in all direction, which may include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or repositioning items as necessary to perform the job duties.
  • Engaging in communication with others to exchange information, which may involve speaking, listening, writing, or using electronic communication methods to ensure clear and effective understanding. This includes both verbal and non-verbal interactions with colleagues, clients, or external parties.
  • Assessing the accuracy, neatness, and completeness of assigned work to ensure it meets quality standards and adhere to established guidelines.
  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, ramps, poles, or other similar structures as required to perform job tasks.
  • Moving about to accomplish task or transitioning between different work sites, which may involve walking, standing, or traveling to various locations as required by the role.
  • Hearing and vision abilities, with or without correction, sufficient to effectively observe and communicate with others.
