Job Description

• Position Title: Teacher• Department: Santa Clara Headstart• Supervisor Title: Head Start Program Director• Salary/Grade: DOE

Position Summary:Under general supervision, promotes good health, physical and emotional well being by planning, organizing, and administering recreation services for entire community.This job description is illustrative only of the responsibilities performed by this position and is not all inclusive.

• Essential Duties and Responsibilities:• Responsible for implementing the Head Start Educational Curriculum in the classroom.• Maintains a healthy and safe environment for the children.• Supervises teacher aide and classroom volunteers.• Keeps inventory of Head Start properties and purchases supplies.• Responsible for all equipment and materials.• Involves parents in all education and program activities.• Works closely with other center staff in carrying out education component.• Keeps accurate attendance records.• Writes lesson plans and submits to Education Coordinator.• Assist in recruiting and enrolling Head Start children.• Attends and participates in required training, workshops, conferences, and other job related functions to improve job skills.• Maintains professional confidentiality with children's files and parent conferences.• Plans cooking activities for children in coordination with Cook.• Plans daily activities according to lesson plans.• Assesses each child's individual needs using testing materials and writes IEP's for each child.• Implements individualized education plan.• Observes children and provides regular feedback.• Provides child enrichment activities for parents to carry out at home.• Conducts conferences and home visits with parents.• Attends bi-weekly center staff meetings, attends monthly parent meetings to support and enhance open communication between parents and staff.• Maintains individual timesheets, makes social and medical referrals to appropriate personnel.• Maintains professional and ethical standards and conduct.• Responsible for JOM plan, budget, and proper documentation of all expenditures.• Must submit attendance records, monthly reports, and lesson plans to administrative office when required.• Maintains a professional and positive attitude and relationship with parents.• Operates tape recorder, monthly reports, and lesson plans to administrative

• Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:• Certified in NM Recreation, Health, Physical Education and Dance.• Certified in First Aid, CPR and trained in Substance Abuse.• Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.• Ability to follow direction in verbal or written format.• Effective oral and written communication.• Able to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines and work under pressure.• Capacity to interact and communicate effectively with children, family members, and other employees of the organization.• Clean driving record, insurable, able to pass• Able to understand and observe rules of confidentiality.

• Minimum Qualifications:• Must have an Associates of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Education; and be able to pass a background check. Must not have any DUI's/DWI's convictions within the last five (5) years from any Tribal, State or Federal Court.• Valid New Mexico Driver's License and insurable through the Tribe's insurance carrier.• Must pass a criminal background check.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, couch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
