About You: We are looking for a Health & Safety Manager who will be responsible for developing, implementing, and enforcing all health, safety, and fire prevention programs related to fire protection construction, testing, commissioning, and service activities at the project site. This role ensures compliance with MSHA, OSHA, NFPA, site-specific safety plans, and owner requirements while proactively identifying and mitigating hazards associates with fire protection system installation and industrial work environments. The position serves as the primary onsite safety authority for fire protection activities and works closely with the Project Manager, Superintendent, Owner, and General Contractor safety teams. This position will be onsite in Nashwauk, Minnesota.

Compensation/Benefits: Competitive salary ranging from $90,000 - $115,000 plus a possible per diem/relocation allowance. Key Responsibilities:

  • Safety Program Management
    • Develop, implement, and maintain the Site-Specific Safety Plan (SSSP) for fire protection scope.
    • Ensure compliance with MSHA, OSHA, NFPA, local AHJ requirements, and owner safety standards.
    • Conduct Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs), and Pre-Task Plans (PTPs).
    • Lead toolbox talks and safety orientations for fire protection crews and subcontractors.
  • Fire Protection-Specific Oversight
    • Oversee safe installation, testing, and commissioning of:
      • Fire sprinkler systems
      • Fire pumps and water supply systems
      • Foam, deluge, and special hazard systems
      • Underground fire mains and hydrants
    • Verify safe handling and storage of combustible materials, flammable liquids, and compressed gases.
    • Monitor hot work, impairment management, and temporary fire protection measures.
    • Coordinate fire watch activities where required.
  • Site Safet & Hazard Control
    • Perform routine and documented site safety inspections.
    • Identify and correct unsafe conditions or behaviors immediately.
    • Enforce lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space, fall protection, trenching, and excavation safety requirements.
    • Stop work authority when unsafe conditions exist.
  • Incident Management
    • Investigate incidents, near misses, and safety violations.
    • Prepare incident reports, root cause analyses, and corrective action plans.
    • Track and trend safety metrics (TRIR, near misses, observations).
  • Coordination & Communication
    • Interface with GC and owner safety teams during site safety meetings.
    • Support audits and inspections by OSHA, owner representatives, and insurance carriers.
    • Coordinate safety requirements with multiple trades working in active industrial environments.
  • Training & Documentation
    • Ensure all fire protection personnel maintain required certifications and training.
    • Maintain safety documentation, permits, inspection logs, and training records.
    • Support safety onboarding for new hires and visiting personnel.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5-10 years of construction safety experience, preferably in industrial fire protection.
  • MSHA certified
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • OSHA construction standards
    • NFPA codes and standards (e.g., NFPA 13, 15, 16, 24, 25, 72)
  • Experience working on active industrial, mining, manufacturing, or heavy commercial sites.
  • Demonstrated authority to enforce safety policies onsite.

Certifications:

  • OSHA 30 (Construction) - required
  • OSHA 510/500 - preferred
  • CHST, CSP, or equivalent safety credential
  • CPR/First Aid
  • Confined Space & LOTO certifications
