POSITION SUMMARY

Manages company's Environmental, Health and Safety (HSE) functions in accordance with policies and procedures to meet business requirements. As part of a multifunctional team, will partner with all areas of our organization to develop effective and progressive safety solutions to drive a culture of safety excellence and performance improvement, with sustainable change.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

  • Champion safe behaviors and safe manufacturing practices by partnering with management, employees, and HSE professionals to raise hazard awareness and prevent injuries.
  • Collaborate with operations and employees to review, implement, and sustain company-wide programs such as behavior-based safety, non-routine task evaluations, risk assessments, ISO safety/environmental standards, and corporate policies.
  • Provide proactive, team-based guidance when reviewing engineering controls or design changes to reduce risks (e.g., machine guarding, ergonomics, traffic, fire/explosion, noise, upset conditions).
  • Work with operations, and employees to conduct incident investigations, identify root causes, and jointly develop effective, timely corrective and preventive actions.
  • Partner with environmental professionals and operations teams to complete inspection, monitoring, testing, and reporting requirements for environmental permits (air, storm water, wastewater, hazardous waste).
  • Guide and support the team in preparing accurate, timely environmental reports for government agencies through collaborative review.
  • Ensure regulatory and internal environmental reporting is satisfied by engaging cross-functional partners in analyzing and addressing environmental incidents.
  • Provide technical expertise while encouraging joint problem-solving for environmental issues across area of responsibility.
  • Communicate effectively with employees and leaders at all levels through face-to-face meetings, large group presentations, phone, email, and written correspondence.
  • Prepare the site and team to interact with regulatory authorities (OSHA, DEP, EPA) in a professional and collaborative manner.
  • Partner with Global and Regional HSE resources to bring in outside expertise and pilot new programs.
  • Build and sustain a high-performing, team-oriented culture by assessing and addressing staffing, training, development, and coaching needs in collaboration with leadership.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Formal Education (Required)

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental, Health & Safety / related Engineering / Science field and/or equivalent HSE experience

  • Knowledge & Experience (Preferred)

  • 5 years of progressive HSE experience, including at least 3 years of team leadership, coaching, and mentoring

  • Demonstrated comfort and skill in public speaking and presenting to large groups

  • Ability to take initiative and proactively engage stakeholders in problem-solving

  • Strong understanding of OSHA requirements

  • Training / experience in ISO certifications and safety programs

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and online platforms, with data analysis capabilities

  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to bring diverse perspectives into discussions

Decision Making Authority:

  • Implements and administers established HSE policies, procedures, and practices to meet requirements supporting short and long-term business needs
  • Collaborates with employees and supervisors to identify and correct potential HSE risks and impacts

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: (TIME SPENT AWAY FROM HOME)

  • Prefer base location in Pittsburgh, PA area to support 3 of the larger plants in the BPI production footprint. Some travel will be expected to other sites to support HSE initiatives, as well as trips to other plant locations for best-marking and collaboration with other HSE professionals.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to sit, stand, hear, and see on a constant basis.

Must be able to walk, write, and type on a frequent basis.

Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.

Must be able to climb and descend stairs.

Must be able to bend, carry, reach, push, and pull on an occasional basis.

Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing.

May work indoors and outdoors as needed. Exposure to heat up to 120 degrees and cold to 0 degrees.

May work in areas where noise level is such that hearing protection is required.

May be exposed to varying amounts of dust and dirt.

Work surfaces may include concrete.

Employee must be able to operate a computer and communicate via telephone.

Some travel to other locations, meetings and/or seminars is required.
