Job Responsibilities
The Heavy Equipment/Diesel Engine Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, repairing, and maintaining large machinery used in various industries, ensuring they operate efficiently and safely as well as responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing diesel lowered vehicles and machinery, ensuring they operate efficiently and safely. Position reports to the Plant Manager and has no supervisory responsibilities.
Conducts regular inspections and preventive maintenance on heavy equipment, including bulldozers, cranes, and excavators, to ensure optimal performance and safety; performs diagnostic tests on diesel engines and vehicles to identify issues and determine necessary repairs.
Uses computerized diagnostic equipment to identify mechanical issues and performs routine maintenance and major repairs on engines, hydraulic systems, transmissions, and other critical systems
Works closely with operators, mechanics, and technicians to diagnose equipment issues, provide maintenance guidance, and develop repair plans
Maintains detailed and accurate records of all preventive maintenance (PM) performed for compliance and tracking purposes.
Test drive vehicles after repairs to ensure they are functioning correctly and safely. Inspect machines, engines, transmissions etc. and run diagnostic tests to discover functionality issues.
Conduct repairs aiming for maximum reliability
Order and maintain necessary parts for equipment repairs
Collaborate/communicate with Plant Manager and General Yard Foreman on equipment repairs/downtime for planning of yard operations
Troubleshoot reported problems and resolve them in a timely manner
Perform thorough maintenance on machinery, equipment and systems
Maintain all safety devices and systems on equipment in accordance with regulations and Koppers Zero Harm principles
Clean and apply lubricants to machinery components
Replenish fluids and components of engines and machinery
Provide consultation on correct maintenance and preventative measures to machine or vehicle users
Undertake other duties as assigned (e.g. repair of hydraulic systems, painting vehicles etc.)
Follow safety protocols and maintain a clean and safe workspace, adhering to local and national regulations
Candidate Qualifications/ Requirements
Required:
3-5 years' Heavy Equipment Mechanic and Diesel
Repair experience required.
Along with knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
Certificate from Tech school or equivalent work experience
Must have a valid driver's license
Must have great attention to detail
Basic computer skills
Ability to work with various machines and tools
Experience working in small teams
Knowledge of various types of heavy equipment
Very strong mechanical knowledge
Ability to fill out logs on all equipment worked on
Knowledge on OSHA regulations pertaining to this position
Must have a safety-first mindset
Preferred:
Welding experience preferred
Extensive safety training
Physical & Work Requirement
Must be able to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and talk or hear.
Must be able to work in all outside weather conditions (wet, hot, cold)
Able to work with a moderate noise level
Ability to create 20-30 plus pounds of pressure, sometimes above shoulder level
Ability to climb in tight spots
PPE includes, but not limited to steal toed boots, heat-resistant gloves, protective mask, ear plugs and, safety glasses
Ability to lift up to 50lbs
