Job Description
R. J. Corman is currently seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team in Billings, MT.
Responsibilities:
- Operate and oversee Key Equipment (i.e. Sideboom, Track loader, Excavator, Vac Truck, Grapple Truck, rubber tire loader, etc.) during derailment recovery, ensuring safe and efficient execution of tasks.
- May perform labor duties as needed.
- Conduct pre- and post-operation inspections of equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Perform advanced equipment maneuvers, including lifting, rerailing, and stabilizing derailed railcars or heavy components.
- Perform preventative maintenance on heavy or specialized equipment.
- Maintain proper equipment appearance and cleanliness.
- Basic mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot simple mechanical failures.
- Practice safe working habits.
- Provide technical training and mentorship to operators I-III, supporting skill development and certification readiness.
- Adhere to all safety regulations and site-specific procedures, including wearing proper PPE and participating in safety briefings.
- Enforce safety protocols and conduct on-site safety checks to protect personnel and equipment during high risks operations.
- Follow DOT regulations; ensuring proper permits and driving regulations are followed.
Specialized or Technical Knowledge, or Education and Experience:
- CDL-A Required with no restrictions.
- Previous experience and familiarity in operation of equipment.
- Proficient with at least one piece of Key Equipment.
- Basic mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot simple mechanical failures is needed.
Physical Requirements:
- Able to perform physical strenuous work.
- Able to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
- Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Requires occasional use of 30 lb claw bar to remove spikes, requiring application of 50 lbs of force.
- Requires occasional use of 10 lb sledgehammer to drive spikes, requiring application of 75 lbs of force.
- Able to walk, climb, and maintain balance on equipment, stairs, ladders, uneven terrain, rails and ballast in a safe manner.
- Able to navigate into confined spaces if necessary.
Environmental Conditions:
- Performs duties in multiple environments including outside construction project settings, in and around moving vehicles and equipment.
- Exposure to weather elements; must wear appropriate PPE required for project site.
