Position Description:
The HVAC Start-Up Technician will play a critical role in supporting commercial construction projects by conducting pre-functional inspections, system start-ups, diagnostics, and warranty-period service on commercial HVAC equipment. This role requires advanced technical knowledge of chillers, boilers, air handlers, VRF systems, refrigeration components, and HVAC control sequences. The HVAC Start-Up Technician will review equipment submittals, interpret wiring diagrams, follow manufacturer installation and start-up procedures, and ensure systems are properly commissioned. Responsibilities also include completing detailed documentation, troubleshooting issues, assisting installation teams, and working closely with commissioning agents to ensure all systems perform as designed. Requirements:
Minimum of four (4) years of experience in commercial HVAC equipment installation and start-up
Strong understanding of HVAC system operations, refrigeration circuits, and equipment sequence of operations
Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, blueprints, submittals, and manufacturer manuals
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and/or iPad-based field reporting tools
Strong communication and customer service skills
Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, and control-related issues
VRF installation and start-up experience preferred
Strong organizational and documentation skills
Commitment to safety and adherence to company policies and procedures
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership:
Support field operations by ensuring proper execution of start-up procedures and accurate documentation for all assigned HVAC systems.
Technical Start-Up & Field Operations:
Perform pre-functional inspections and complete start-up checklists for chillers, boilers, air handlers, VRF units, split systems, and other commercial HVAC equipment
Conduct diagnostics and make necessary repairs on refrigeration systems during start-up and warranty periods
Interpret control schematics, high-voltage wiring diagrams, and manufacturer-provided installation documentation
Assist installation teams in preparing field-installed devices and components prior to start-up
Troubleshoot equipment performance, controls issues, and operational deficiencies
Work closely with commissioning agents and complete all commissioning documentation
Document inspection results, start-up data, identified issues, and corrective actions
Reporting:
Provide accurate and timely start-up reports and equipment documentation to project managers, commissioning teams, and internal stakeholders.
Compliance:
Follow and enforce all company safety procedures
Ensure all start-up activities meet project specifications, manufacturer requirements, and commissioning standards
Maintain organized, accurate documentation for all systems and field activities
