Job Description
System One is seeking an experienced Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Design Engineer to support advanced nuclear reactor development.
This contract position supports system design, prototype development and testing, plant-level system integration, and commissioning activities for Sodium Fast Reactor technologies. The selected candidate will report directly to the Non-Safety I&C Manager and will interface with multidisciplinary engineering teams to support Generation IV advanced nuclear reactor development.
Depending on qualifications and experience, the position may be filled at various levels within the I&C organization.
This position is remote, with minimal travel required.
Key Responsibilities
Interface with geographically diverse and international engineering teams to develop supporting design documentation.
Develop and review system- and component-level specifications and scopes of work.
Perform engineering evaluations applying nuclear codes, standards, licensing requirements, and NRC regulations.
Specify and evaluate instrumentation measurement techniques for sodium fast reactor and integrated energy storage applications, including analysis of measurement range, response time, and accuracy.
Analyze and apply regulatory criteria and standards to complex Instrumentation and Control system designs.
Develop and review technical design documents including:
System Requirements Documents (SRDs)
System Design Descriptions (SDDs)
Interface Control Documents (ICDs)
Engineering Design Specifications
Create and manage drawing packages including:
P&IDs
Control system architecture drawings
Control logic and loop diagrams
Instrument installation drawings
Generate integrated design packages for key systems and components.
Provide technical direction and oversight of supplier projects, including review of deliverables.
Support licensing activities associated with Safety Analysis Reports.
Apply effective change control principles when evaluating design changes and impacts to interfacing systems.
Integrate I&C scope with other engineering disciplines and subject matter experts.
Support continuous learning and application of nuclear industry best practices.
Minimum Qualifications & Required Skills
B.S. or higher in Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline from an accredited university, plus 10+ years of direct experience with proven instrumentation and controls systems expertise. Advanced degrees may count toward years of experience.
Demonstrated experience in instrumentation and controls development and diagnostics.
Proven ability to design, develop, and deliver industrial I&C platforms and report system data accordingly.
Strong experience designing and integrating industrial I&C systems in complex engineering environments.
Familiarity with implementing design control and development in accordance with nuclear power plant quality assurance standards (e.g., 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, ASME NQA-1).
Ability to manage multiple simultaneous engineering tasks requiring a multidisciplinary approach.
Strong technical writing, communication, and documentation skills.
Ability to work independently and coordinate cross-functional design efforts with minimal direction.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience with nuclear reactor safety systems or nuclear instrumentation systems design.
Familiarity with IEEE and IEC standards.
Experience designing and operating high-temperature processes (400°C and higher).
Familiarity with industrial Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
Experience with CAD software such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, or SolidWorks.
Experience supporting formal I&C system startup testing procedures.

Fine motor control and extended keyboard use.
Minimal physical exertion; ability to safely lift up to 25 pounds.
Standard office work environment (>8 hours/day).
