Join the future of news

We're on a mission to deliver riveting storytelling for all of America. At The Washington Post, you'll help reinvent news. Our work is driven by a deep investigative spirit and enhanced by innovation to bring audiences closer to the stories that matter most.

About Our Team

The Washington Post is powered by the passion and talent of our people. It takes all of us to reinvent news. Beyond our award-winning Newsroom and Opinions teams, we work across many departments, including Brand & Events, Communications, Customer Care, Engineering & Product, Finance, Human Resources, Legal, Marketing & Advertising, Print Operations, and Sales.

Why This Role Matters

The Washington Post is seeking a sharp, ambitious and conceptually strong reporter to cover the evolving information economy - the systems, platforms and power structures that shape how information is created, distributed, monetized and consumed.

This is a wide-ranging and fast-moving beat at the intersection of technology, business, media and society. The reporter will examine how information flows through digital platforms, how it is packaged and amplified, and how economic incentives - from advertising and subscriptions to creator monetization and AI - are reshaping what people see, trust and understand about the world.

We're looking for a journalist who can move fluidly between breaking news, trend reporting and ambitious enterprise. The ideal candidate will bring a strong sense of curiosity about how the modern information ecosystem works - and how it is changing - along with the ability to translate complex systems into clear, compelling journalism for a broad audience.

This position is based in our Washington, D.C., newsroom.

What Motivates You:

  • You are fascinated by how information is produced, distributed and consumed in the digital age.

  • You are curious about the economic forces shaping media, platforms and online behavior.

  • You are driven to uncover how power operates in the information ecosystem - and who benefits.

  • You enjoy connecting technological change to real-world consequences for audiences and society.

  • You thrive in a collaborative newsroom and are eager to experiment with new story forms.

How You'll Support the Mission:

  • Break news and produce enterprise stories on the platforms, companies and systems that define the modern information economy.

  • Cover major technology platforms, emerging media business models and the evolving creator ecosystem.

  • Examine how incentives - including advertising, subscriptions, algorithms and AI - shape the production and distribution of information.

  • Investigate the impact of these systems on public discourse, trust, misinformation and audience behavior.

  • Identify emerging trends and anticipate how the information landscape is evolving.

  • Develop sources across technology companies, startups, academia, policy circles and the media industry.

  • Produce explanatory and analytical journalism that makes complex systems accessible to a general audience.

  • Collaborate with colleagues across technology, business, politics and audience teams to deliver comprehensive coverage.

The Skills and Experiences You Bring:

  • A track record of producing impactful reporting on technology, media, business or related fields.

  • Strong source-building skills and the ability to cultivate relationships across a range of industries.

  • Demonstrated ability to break news and deliver ambitious enterprise on a competitive beat.

  • Comfort explaining complex systems - including algorithms, business models and digital ecosystems - in clear and engaging ways.

  • A sharp instinct for stories that resonate with broad audiences.

  • Strong writing skills and the ability to work quickly under deadline pressure.

  • A collaborative mindset and a willingness to experiment with new approaches to storytelling.

Interested candidates should upload a résumé, cover letter and three examples of their work (as PDFs) to our jobs portal by Apr. 1. The cover letter should be addressed to Tech and Media Editor Alexis Fitts, Deputy Futures Editor Juliet Eilperin and Futures Editor Zach Goldfarb.

The salary range for this position is $97,400 - $162,300. The actual starting salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.

Collaboration makes us stronger. That's why our offices are designed with open layouts, modern technology, and easy access to transportation. With certain exceptions for newsgathering and business travel, we work on-site five days a week.
