BACKGROUND:The International Rescue Committee (IRC),establishedin 1933, is a prominent non-profit organization dedicated toassistingrefugees and those affected by oppression or violent conflict.Providinga wide range of services, the IRC focuses on emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation, resettlement, and advocacy for vulnerable populations. Within the United States, the organizationoperates28 offices that support newly arrived individuals by ensuring they have access to essential resources such as food, shelter, and clothing, while also working with refugees to help them achieve self-sufficiency.
SCOPE OFVOLUNTEERWORK:
Theintensivecase management(ICM)program offers essential support toour most vulnerablerefugee clients, guiding clients on their journey to self-sufficiency during their crucial first yearsin the U.S.ICM clients include single parent families, LGBTQ+, survivors of domestic violence, and clients with complex medical and mental health needs.Our servicesinclude comprehensiveassistancein health, employment, finances, DWS, education, housing, family, and community integration. As a casework intern, you will collaborate closely with experiencedICMcaseworkers, gaining valuable insights and hands-on experience in allfacetsof our impactful casework program.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Shadowingcaseworkersand learning how to deliver core services
Assistingclients with core services, including but not limited to:
Benefits applications
Bus and grocery store orientations
Job search and applications
Delivering food and in-kind donation items
Personal finance and bill payment
Transportation to appointments
Medical insurance navigation
Home visits
Client relocations
Referring and connecting clientsto community services
Assistingwalk-in clients, as needed
Supporting caseworkers in data compliance, including case filing, case noting, data entry, and tracking
Participation in weekly casework team meetings
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Understand how state and federal policies affect services to clients.
Experience working with diverse populations.
Learn the social work interventions/models used at the agency and will practice applying social worktheories/approaches to cases (strengths, empowerment, ecological, systems, etc.).
Learn how to navigate and understand social benefits and resources available in our Utahcommunities.
REQUIREMENTS:
Must be currently enrolled in a graduate/undergraduate program, or have graduated less than 6 months ago
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English; fluency inadditionalforeign language preferred.
Background in social work OR other related fields
Experience working with refugees/diverse populations, elderly, domestic violence survivors, of people with disabilities
Motivated, flexible and ability to work independently, prioritize, and manage time effectively
Strong computerskillwithproficiencyin Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
Demonstrated ability to communicate and work as a team member in a cross-cultural environment

This is an unpaidvolunteerposition. No financial compensation, including compensation for relocation, is available.
