Job Description
OVERVIEW:
The Interaction Design Intern will work closely with the Lead Interactive Media Designer as part of the Interactive Media Team to develop digital-interactive experiences for upcoming Museum exhibits. This role spans the full design cycle, from early brainstorming and user-experience planning through wireframing, high-fidelity design, and coordination with in-house software developers. The intern will contribute to digital experiences that extend beyond screens, including VR and hybrid-modality interactives, while collaborating within a multidisciplinary creative team.
The Children's Museum is building and sustaining an inclusive culture that encourages, supports, and celebrates differences. Successful candidates will demonstrate the desire and ability to make positive contributions to our growth. We believe that collaboration and open dialogue among persons with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives best support our vision and mission.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interpret user flow diagrams and descriptions that define visitor experiences from initial engagement through post-interaction reflection.
Develop wireframe structures that capture the scope and functionality of interactive experiences.
Create high-fidelity design comprehensives, including typography, layout, control elements, and use of image, audio-visual, and motion graphic assets.
Annotate build requirements and collaborate with in-house software developers to ensure design integrity throughout development.
Participate in quality assurance reviews of final interactive builds.
Meet regularly with the Lead Interactive Media Designer to discuss projects and learning experiences.
Actively participate in twice-weekly team meetings.
REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of at least three years of undergraduate coursework (summer following junior year preferred).
Preferred majors include Interactive Media Design, Visual Communication Design, Graphic Design, User Interface Design, or a closely related field.
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects, and Audition, as well as Figma.
Strong typographic practice and visual design skills.
Clear oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively within a creative team and explain design thinking to non-design colleagues.
Portfolio demonstrating exploration, curiosity, and design process required.
Ability and availability to work on-site.
Availability to work approximately 25 hours per week is preferred.
ADA REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to sit and work at a computer for extended periods of time, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Must be able to view, create, and edit visual and written materials, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Must be able to communicate effectively with team members, with or without reasonable accommodation.
