Job Description

Why This Role Matters

Each year, Missouri citizens-especially seniors-lose millions of dollars to investment fraud. The Investor Protection Specialist helps prevent those losses by reaching people before scammers do - through education, storytelling, and creative outreach that makes complex information understandable and actionable.

This position is ideal for someone who wants to combine marketing expertise with public service impact-protecting Missourians and strengthening financial confidence statewide.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and Develop Education Campaigns: Create and promote statewide investor education outreach initiatives-via in-person, digital, broadcast, and community channels to raise awareness of investment fraud prevention and investor best practices.
  • Drive Digital and Social Media Engagement: Work with the Securities Commissioner and Secretary of State Communications Director to develop targeted social media and online advertising campaigns that connect with Missourians across platforms.
  • Represent the Division Publicly: Deliver presentations at conferences, senior centers, securities symposiums, schools, and civic events to educate the public and promote the Division's investor protection message to help investors identify risks with investing.
  • Build Partnerships: Collaborate with senior citizen advocacy groups, Department of Health & Senior Services, trade groups, libraries, schools, and community organizations to extend the reach of investor education efforts.
  • Create Accessible Educational Content: Produce clear, engaging materials-videos, radio spots, brochures, promotional products and online resources-that help citizens identify scams and make informed financial choices. Maintain and update the Securities Division website to create a resource that informs and protects Missourians from fraud.
  • Develop Educational Outreach: Connect with school-age children through the development of age-appropriate resources, including the Division's connection to the Stock Market Game, utilized in classrooms across the state.
  • Secure Resources and Track Trends: Identify non-partisan grants to further extend and develop Missouri's investor protection efforts while monitoring emerging fraud trends to continuously improve education and outreach strategies.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in marketing, social media, communications, public relations, education, journalism, or a related field is highly preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Demonstrated experience developing and managing public outreach or awareness campaigns, preferably in a government, nonprofit, or advocacy setting.
    • Strong writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to explain complex topics in clear, engaging, and accessible language.
    • Proven ability to use social media and digital platforms strategically to reach and influence target audiences.
    • Experience in public speaking or training is preferred.
    • Experience with financial or consumer protection topics is helpful but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Creative communicator with strong interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Skilled in planning and executing multimedia marketing campaigns.
  • Able to build and maintain community partnerships across diverse audiences.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with attention to detail.
  • Willingness to travel across Missouri (approximately 0-6 days per month).

The above job description in no way implies that these are the only duties to be performed by this employee. The incumbent is expected to perform other duties necessary for the effective operation of the department.
