Position SummaryThe Principal Scrum Master serves as a senior-level agile practitioner and transformationleader, guiding cross-functional teams through complex enterprise initiatives using bothAgile and traditional Waterfall SDLC methodologies. This role combines deep expertise inScrum frameworks with practical knowledge of structured project managementapproaches to deliver high-value outcomes across diverse technology portfolios. ThePrincipal Scrum Master operates as a strategic advisor, coaching teams and leadership onmethodology selection, hybrid delivery models, and continuous improvement practicesthat drive operational excellence.Key ResponsibilitiesAgile Leadership & CoachingFacilitate Scrum ceremonies (sprint planning, daily stand-ups, retrospectives,reviews) for multiple high-performing teamsCoach teams, Product Owners, and stakeholders on Agile principles, practices, andmindset transformationMentor junior Scrum Masters and Agile practitioners across the organizationChampion agile adoption and scaling frameworks (SAFe, LeSS, Scrum@Scale) forenterprise-wide initiativesHybrid Methodology ManagementAssess project complexity, regulatory requirements, and organizational readiness todetermine optimal delivery approach (Agile, Waterfall, or hybrid)Design and implement tailored hybrid frameworks that blend Agile flexibility withWaterfall structure for large-scale programsNavigate stage-gate governance processes while maintaining agile team velocityand adaptabilityBridge communication between agile teams and traditional PMO structuresProgram & Portfolio CoordinationSupport complex, multi-team programs valued at $50M+ with dependencies acrossenterprise systemsFacilitate PI (Program Increment) planning, value stream mapping, and cross-teamsynchronizationTrack and report on team health metrics, velocity, burn-down/burn-up charts, andvalue deliveryManage risks, impediments, and dependencies across agile and waterfall workstreamsStakeholder Engagement & CommunicationTranslate technical progress into executive-level insights for leadership decisionmakingBuild trust and transparency with business partners through consistent delivery andproactive communicationFacilitate workshops and alignment sessions with cross-functional stakeholdersDrive cultural change by modeling servant leadership and collaborative problemsolvingContinuous Improvement & InnovationIdentify and implement process improvements that enhance team performance andproduct qualityLead retrospectives that generate actionable insights and sustainableorganizational changeStay current on industry best practices, emerging frameworks, and agile toolingContribute to organizational agile maturity and center of excellence initiativesRequired QualificationsEducationBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Business Administration, or related field (orequivalent experience)CertificationsCertified Scrum Master (CSM) or Professional Scrum Master (PSM II)SAFe Program Consultant (SPC), SAFe Agilist (SA), or equivalent scaling certificationProject Management Professional (PMP) or PRINCE2 certification preferredExperience8+ years in software development lifecycle (SDLC) environments5+ years as a Scrum Master or Agile Coach supporting enterprise-scale initiatives3+ years working with traditional Waterfall/PRINCE2 project managementmethodologiesProven track record leading teams through large-scale ERP implementations,system integrations, or digital transformationsExperience in regulated industries (utilities, energy, finance, healthcare) stronglypreferredDemonstrated success coaching teams in SAP, Oracle, or other enterpriseplatformsTechnical SkillsDeep understanding of Agile frameworks (Scrum, Kanban, XP, SAFe)Proficiency with Agile tools (Jira, Azure DevOps, Rally, VersionOne)Working knowledge of Waterfall/Phase-Gate methodologies and MS ProjectFamiliarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and automationUnderstanding of enterprise architecture and system integration patternsCore CompetenciesServant leadership with ability to influence without authorityExceptional facilitation, coaching, and conflict resolution skillsStrong analytical and problem-solving capabilitiesStrategic thinking with attention to tactical executionExcellent written and verbal communication across all organizational levelsAdaptability to navigate ambiguity and organizational changePreferred QualificationsMaster's degree in related fieldAdvanced agile certifications (CSP-SM, A-CSM, ICP-Client)Experience with Lean, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodologiesBackground in change management and organizational developmentPrior experience at client or in the utility/energy sectorTrack record delivering initiatives valued at $50M+ with measurable businessoutcomesPhysical Requirements & Work EnvironmentStandard o ice environment with hybrid work flexibilityAbility to sit for extended periods during workshops and ceremoniesOccasional travel to facilitate cross-site collaboration (10-20%)Availability for virtual collaboration across time zonesSuccess MetricsTeam velocity stability and predictability ( 15% variance)Sprint goal achievement rate (>85%)Stakeholder satisfaction scoresReduction in blockers and impediment resolution timeTeam maturity progression and self-organizationOn-time, on-budget delivery of program milestonesEmployee engagement and retention within coached teams
