Job Description

Description

The Software Developer is a motivated team player sought by Tyler Technologies, the organization behind eGovernment services in the State of Kansas. Join our talented team leading a new era of digital public service - building web and mobile applications that improve the lives of Kansas citizens.

This role is ideal for a junior or early-career developer who is eager to learn, collaborate, and grow. You'll work within a supportive team to maintain and test existing applications while expanding your technical skills to assist in developing new, innovative features. You'll also contribute to modernizing our application portfolio, helping to build out new microservice-based applications that power our next generation of public service technology.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain web applications using Java, Groovy/Grails, and related technologies.
  • Support the maintenance of existing applications, including fixing bugs and optimizing performance.
  • Assist in the development of new features and applications from established specifications.
  • Collaborate with team members, customers, and stakeholders to define project requirements and goals.
  • Participate in code reviews, testing, and documentation to ensure code quality and stability.
  • Implement secure coding practices and help ensure compliance with standards, including handling of sensitive data such as payment information.
  • Gain hands-on experience with Oracle and Postgres databases, JDBC, and SQL.
  • Learn about and contribute to cloud-native development and AWS architecture.
  • Explore AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude.ai) to improve efficiency and code quality.
  • Work with APIs and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) integrations to connect systems.
  • Contribute to modernization efforts by helping build and support microservice applications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to achieve departmental goals and timelines.

Qualifications:

  • Some experience (through coursework, internships, or projects) developing web or Java applications.
  • Familiarity with Java or another object-oriented programming language (willingness to learn Groovy/Grails is a plus).
  • Understanding of databases, SQL, and basic database design principles.
  • Interest in or exposure to cloud environments (AWS or similar).
  • Curiosity about microservices, API integrations, and secure coding.
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Eagerness to learn, adapt to new technologies, and work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for effective teamwork and customer interaction.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience - self-taught developers are encouraged to apply.

Why Work Here:

  • Work that matters - your code directly improves public services for Kansas citizens.
  • Mentorship from experienced engineers who will help you grow your technical and professional skills.
  • Exposure to modern development practices including AI-assisted coding, cloud computing, and microservice architectures.
  • A supportive culture that values curiosity, innovation, and collaboration.
  • Opportunities to take ownership of your learning journey and contribute to meaningful, real-world solutions.

In Summary

This is an excellent opportunity for a junior developer ready to begin their professional journey in a collaborative, mission-driven environment. If you're passionate about technology, excited to learn, and want to make an impact through your work - we'd love for you to apply, even if you don't meet every qualification.
