Job Description

Overview

Our client is a well-established, award-winning architecture, planning, and interiors firm with decades of experience and multiple offices across California and beyond. Known for designing communities that promote human fulfillment and well-being, they have built a strong reputation for thoughtful, high-quality educational work and a people-first studio culture. They offer a collaborative environment where design excellence, professional growth, and meaningful client relationships are at the core of everything they do.

We are looking for a technically skilled, design-driven Job Captain to join their Education team in San Diego or Irvine, CA. In this role, you will work closely with a senior project leader and take ownership of key technical aspects of large projects—or several smaller projects—from late design through construction, helping to investigate, evaluate, and recommend design solutions that best serve our clients’ needs.

This is a hybrid position, requiring a minimum of 3 days per week onsite at their Irvine or San Diego office.

What You'll Do

  • Provide architectural support and consultation from late Design Development through building permit submittal and Construction Administration for K–12 projects.

  • Apply advanced architectural concepts and design solutions that respond to educational program needs and code requirements.

  • Review and coordinate drawings and details to ensure they meet established standards, specifications, and DSA requirements.

  • Help monitor project budgets and schedules, and maintain clear, accurate project documentation.

  • Prepare reports, specifications, and other technical documents as needed.

  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with clients, consultants, and internal technical teams.

  • Supervise and mentor technical staff as appropriate, including redlining and quality‑checking others’ work.

What You'll Bring

  • Strong knowledge of building codes, with an understanding of how different project types and occupancies impact building design and construction.

  • Proven experience producing complete construction document sets from start to finish.

  • Solid skills in SketchUp, AutoCAD, and Revit/BIM; experience with Adobe Creative/Design Suite is a plus.

  • Hands‑on experience working in the construction phases of projects (CA, RFIs, submittals, etc.).

  • Self‑motivated, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a coordinated project team.

  • Strong problem‑solving skills, sound judgment, good listening skills, and reliable follow‑through.

  • Excellent graphic, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively and provide clear direction to architectural staff.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of professional experience in architecture, including at least 1 year serving as a Job Captain.

  • California K–12 project experience and DSA experience are required.

  • Professional architectural degree from a NAAB‑accredited 4‑ or 5‑year program.

  • Demonstrated commitment to professional growth, ideally including progress toward architectural licensure.

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer; visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage

  • Pre-tax Flexible Spending Plan

  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)

  • 401(k)
