Job Description Summary:

Junior Ranger Crew Members work as part of the Open Space and Mountain Parks' team, completing trail maintenance and other resource management projects; learning about the environment and how to care for the land; providing excellent customer service to visitors; and practicing leadership skills. On Junior Ranger Trail Crews, we do hands-on, outdoor work building trails, pulling weeds, building fences, and lots more! Your Crew Leads will give you the chance to explore careers in natural resources, become more confident in your skills, be a steward of our public lands, and lead in your community.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Completes trail maintenance and other resource management projects including trail maintenance & repair, corridor clearing, erosion control, vegetation management, forestry, restoration and more (primarily Trail crews).

  • Learns and applies knowledge such as: trail maintenance, naturalist training, wildland fire ecology, leadership and public service, natural resource/visitor protection, wildlife ecology, habitat restoration, and customer service.

  • Follows rules, regulations and policies; helps to maintain safety, order, and discipline of self and other participants.

  • Reports and takes responsibility for mistakes and/or accidents.

  • Demonstrates knowledge or willingness to learn about racial equity and inclusion.

  • Works as part of a team; and participates in learning opportunities.

  • Openly shares successes and challenges; and seeks to understand all aspects of a project or skill.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude; you are flexible, humble, adaptable and coachable. No previous work experience necessary!

  • Ability to demonstrate strong interest in being a team player; you are willing to help with less-fun tasks.

  • Ability to demonstrate excitement, commitment, and determination to learn, work, and behave to the best of your ability if chosen for the program.

  • Ability to learn safe practices and make good judgments related to safety.

  • Ability to follow through on commitments. You must commit to a full session of work without missing any days.

  • Ability to create your own personal email address if you do not already have one.

  • At least 14 years old and NO MORE than 17 years old by May 1st, 2026.

  • Have and maintain an acceptable background check including criminal history.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience with the Junior Ranger program, and desire to use past trails and team knowledge of Junior Ranger program to model and teach new team members

  • Ability and desire to build leadership skills and help Crew Leads teach new crew members

  • Ability and desire to help lead games and activities

  • Ability and desire to contribute at a higher level as a returning Junior Ranger

  • Bilingual and biliterate English/Spanish

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • No education or experience is required for this role.

SUPERVISION:

Supervision Received: Volunteerism and Service Learning Senior Program Manager

Supervision Exercised: none

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Physical ability to perform tasks in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions including lifting, standing for long periods, walking on rough terrain and kneeling. Ability to use a variety of manual tools. Upper body strength to lift up to 15 pounds on a daily basis, and up to 45 pounds with a team on an occasional basis. Work takes place in a field setting with continuous interruptions and background noises.

  • Responsible for safety of self and others, materials, and equipment

  • Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents
