Position Summary

Reporting primarily to the Dean, with a secondary reporting relationship to the Laboratory Director, the Laboratory Instructor and Coordinator - Mechanical Engineering (Thermo-Fluid and Aerospace), plays a key role in coordinating laboratory operations and delivering high-quality, hands-on instruction in undergraduate engineering laboratories. This position is critical in advancing experiential learning, student success, and continuous program improvement through effective laboratory management, instructional support, and collaboration with faculty.

Essential Functions

Laboratory Instruction

Teach and/or support instruction in undergraduate engineering laboratory courses: Deliver technical demonstrations, guide students in experimental methods, data acquisition, analysis, and technical documentation. Support project-based learning activities, design projects, and prototype development. Grade and assess student laboratory reports, assignments, and projects to support student learning outcomes.

Laboratory Coordination & Operations: Coordinate the scheduling, setup, and operation of engineering laboratories. Maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate laboratory equipment, instruments, and computing resources. Manage laboratory inventory, procurement of supplies, and vendor coordination. Develop and update laboratory manuals, instructional materials, and standard operating procedures. Support senior design projects, student competition teams, and applied research activities.

Safety & Compliance: Ensure compliance with institutional laboratory safety policies and applicable state and federal regulations. Maintain safety documentation, inspection records, and risk assessments. Promote a culture of safe laboratory practices and responsible equipment use.

Assessment, Accreditation & Continuous Improvement: Access Laboratory Learning Outcomes. Support documentation and data collection for accreditation and program review processes. Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to laboratory curriculum and student engagement.

Service & Collaboration: Participate in departmental meetings, outreach events, recruitment activities, and open houses. Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to enhance the laboratory learning environment. Provide mentoring and technical guidance to students.

Workload / Percent Effort

  • Instruction (lab delivery, instruction of record, grading): 20–40% (covering ~10 credits of lab instruction per year).

  • Lab coordination, preparation, student support, and operational responsibilities: 60–80%.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three years of industry Experience.

  • Experience with laboratory instruction, grading, and student assessment.

The job grade for this position is Grade 8.

The expected salary for this position is between $78,000.00 - $98,000.00 which reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this role.
